Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King met in Boston in early 1952, married on June 18, 1953, and raised four children while their lives intersected with the civil-rights movement. Their public partnership was only part of the story: Coretta was already committed to music, peace, and social justice, and she continued to lead major work after Martin’s assassination in 1968.
How Martin and Coretta met
Coretta Scott was born on April 27, 1927, near Marion, Alabama. She studied music and voice at Antioch College in Ohio before enrolling at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston in 1951. Martin Luther King Jr. was in Boston pursuing a doctorate at Boston University’s School of Theology when a mutual friend, Mary Powell, introduced them in early 1952.
The Stanford King Institute chronology dates the start of their courtship to February 1952. In his recollection in The Autobiography of Martin Luther King, Jr., edited by Clayborne Carson, Martin described their early conversations as ranging over racial and economic injustice and peace. He later recalled telling her, “You have everything I ever wanted in a woman. We ought to get married someday.” This is his retrospective account, not a transcript of the conversation.
Courtship, marriage, and education
In August 1952, Coretta met the King family. They became engaged in April 1953 and married on June 18 that year at the Scott family home near Marion, Alabama. Martin’s father performed the ceremony. The couple then began married life in Boston, where both were completing their education. Coretta earned her bachelor of music degree in June 1954.

Their marriage took shape alongside Martin’s ministry and the growing civil-rights movement. In 1954, he became pastor of Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. Coretta was not simply drawn into activism through him: the King Institute describes her as an activist in her own right and records that she was already actively concerned with social issues when they met.
Their children and shared public life
Martin and Coretta had four children:
- Yolanda Denise King, born in 1955
- Martin Luther King III, born in 1957
- Dexter Scott King, born in 1961
- Bernice Albertine King, born in 1963
While raising their family, Coretta participated in civil-rights campaigns and developed a public role through music. Her freedom concerts combined poetry, singing, and lectures, with proceeds supporting the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). She also traveled with Martin to Ghana in 1957 and India in 1959.

Coretta’s independent activism
Coretta’s work included causes that were not simply extensions of Martin’s campaigns. Her interest in disarmament took her to Geneva in 1962 as a Women’s Strike for Peace delegate to the 17-nation Disarmament Conference. In 1964, she accompanied Martin to Oslo for the ceremony where he received the Nobel Peace Prize.
Martin later acknowledged the equality of their commitment in a recollection included in the edited autobiography: “I wish I could say that I led her down this path, but I must say we went down it together because she was as actively involved and concerned when we met as she is now.” Coretta, reflecting on their shared work in her own autobiography, described it as a blessing to be “a co-worker with a man whose life would have so profound an impact on the world.” Both statements are retrospective quotations reproduced by the King Institute.

After Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination
Martin was assassinated in Memphis on April 4, 1968, while supporting striking sanitation workers. In the days after his death, Coretta led a march in support of the Memphis workers. She also represented his views at an anti–Vietnam War rally and helped launch the Poor People’s Campaign in May.
Coretta went on to help establish the Martin Luther King, Jr., Center for Nonviolent Social Change and served as its founding president. Her work there helped preserve and advance Martin’s legacy, but it also continued her own commitment to nonviolent social change.

King holiday and later leadership
In 1983, Coretta led a major commemoration of the 1963 March on Washington. She chaired the Federal Holiday Commission as plans for the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration were formalized. The annual celebration began in January 1986.
Coretta Scott King died on January 30, 2006, at age 78, in Rosarito Beach, Mexico. Her life’s work encompassed music, civil-rights activism, peace and disarmament advocacy, family, and leadership after her husband’s death.

What the timeline can—and cannot—show
Institutional sources establish key public milestones in their relationship: their meeting and courtship, marriage, children, overlapping activism, and Coretta’s leadership after 1968. They do not provide a complete account of the private dynamics of the marriage. The timeline is therefore best understood as a record of documented events and public work, not a full portrait of their private life. The King Institute notes that its detailed King chronology currently runs through December 1960 and is updated with each volume release; its Coretta Scott King biography provides context for her later life and work.
