Brendan Abernathy’s “Married in a Year” grew out of a painful dating pattern: he said seven women he had dated married the next people they went out with. The song turns that experience into a broader reflection on comparison, self-worth and feeling behind in life. Its viral clip was the opening of a full-length song, recorded live at Los Angeles’s Moroccan Lounge on May 18, 2025.
What is “Married in a Year” about?
Abernathy told The Washington Post that seven women he had dated married the next people they went out with. The pattern left him asking what was wrong with him. In the song, that question becomes a portrait of feeling unworthy or unloved while watching other people appear to move into the lives they want.
The narrator imagines a suburban marriage and family, set against his own uncertainty as an artist. Abernathy said the album explores comparison more broadly: measuring yourself against friends, your younger self and cultural ideas of success. The domestic future in the lyric is therefore not just a prediction about one relationship; it gives shape to the feeling that everyone else has found a destination while you are still trying to work out your path.
Why did the clip go viral?
A live performance became the source
The widely shared video was recorded during Abernathy’s performance at the Moroccan Lounge in Los Angeles on May 18, 2025. The Washington Post reported that roughly 200 people were there. The intimate live setting, his earnest delivery and his tiptoe movements gave viewers details to imitate and turn into parodies.

Viewers reacted with both mockery and curiosity
The clip inspired parodies and remakes, while also bringing new listeners to Abernathy’s music. He told the Post that he was glad people were hearing his work: “I have worked really hard to connect with people and get my art heard, my music heard. And that’s what stands out to me is — people are hearing it.”
In an August 2025 report, NPR described Abernathy’s response as mixed: “It was really hard. Also, some of it was really funny. And I can recognize both of those things at the same time.” That tension matters: the attention could be uncomfortable and comic to him at once, rather than a simple story of either triumph or humiliation.

Reported view counts are snapshots, not current totals
The Washington Post reported more than 13 million views for the original TikTok video in its May 29, 2025 story. The Publish Press reported 35 million views across Abernathy’s videos on TikTok and Instagram in a June 2025 profile. These are different measures: one is the original TikTok video; the other covers videos across two platforms. Neither figure should be read as a current total.

No. Abernathy said the song runs three minutes; the viral 30-second passage is its introduction and also the intro to his debut album, The Kid Who Got It All Wrong. As he put it to the Post, “Well, first of all, it’s a three-minute song. It’s not a 30-second song.” He also described the song’s personal feeling as widely recognizable: “Through this song, I’m depicting that, in reality, we all feel that way.”
