The Western Australian film studio announced in 2022 for Fremantle was moved to the southern edge of Whiteman Park, near Malaga. It was later built as Perth Film Studios on a 16-hectare site in Malaga. The original “$100 million” figure was the project’s headline framing at the time, not the current reported investment.
Where is Perth Film Studios?
The studio is in Malaga, on the southern edge of Whiteman Park, near Marshall Road and the proposed Malaga station. That is the site selected after the plan shifted from Fremantle’s Victoria Quay in November 2022. The completed facility is called Perth Film Studios.
Why did the proposed location change?
Then-Premier Mark McGowan said the Whiteman Park location offered room for future expansion, unlike a constrained site. In a November 2022 PerthNow report, he said: “If you build these things in a constrained location you don’t have room for expansion in the future and that’s the lesson from around the world and that’s lesson we’ve learned.”
What happened to the original $100 million plan?
The $100 million figure belongs to the 2022 announcement and contemporaneous reporting. Later Western Australian Government figures describe a substantially larger investment:

The later totals describe different parts of the project from the original announcement figure: the government reports $233.5 million for design and construction, plus $57 million for the first decade of operations and facilities management.
When was the studio completed, and what does it contain?
The Western Australian Government says practical completion was achieved in December 2025 and production activity began in 2026. The 16-hectare Malaga facility includes four sound stages with a combined area of 8,361 square metres, two annexes, workshops and a backlot.

Which productions are using the studio?
The government has identified Two Birds and Saltwater Cowboys of Shark Bay among the first productions. The government project page says Two Birds was expected to contribute more than $17 million to the economy and employ more than 100 local cast and crew. Those are projections attributed to the government, not reported realized results.
The studio was also presented as a way to support local screen-industry work. In November 2022, McGowan said the aim was to provide local production facilities for young people graduating from WAAPA as its move to the city was then planned for 2025.

What was forecast in 2022, and what is known now?
At the time of the location announcement, McGowan expected negotiations with preferred proponent Home Fire Creative Industries to be finalized the following year and anticipated an opening “sometime in 2025.” Those were forecasts, not the eventual delivery dates. The government project timeline records design and construction arrangements, development approval and forward works in 2023; construction and the operational agreement with Home Fire in 2024; practical completion in December 2025; and production activity beginning in 2026.
The cited government material gives project and forecast figures, but does not establish a measured, studio-wide economic impact after operations began.
