How did the story connect the two series?
The 1990s case in NCIS: Origins
NCIS: Origins follows a younger Gibbs in the early 1990s. In the crossover episode, he and the team investigated the death of a naval officer in a small town. Harmon appeared as present-day Gibbs, distinct from the younger Gibbs at the center of the prequel’s regular timeline.
The modern-day continuation in NCIS
The case’s connection carried into the modern-day NCIS episode that followed. The structure let the prequel’s historical mystery reach the present-day team, rather than treating the two installments as unrelated guest appearances.

Was this the same as Mark Harmon’s newer NCIS: Origins role?
No. The November 2025 crossover was a special guest appearance in one Origins installment. CBS’s current NCIS: Origins page describes a separate Season 3 storyline in which Harmon appears as present-day Gibbs throughout the season, as part of a mystery connected to his Camp Pendleton days. CBS also describes Harmon as the series narrator. That later, season-long arc should not be confused with the completed crossover.
When and where can you watch the crossover?
The original broadcast was Tuesday, November 11, 2025, on CBS. CBS’s show page lists Origins episodes and links to Paramount+, but episode availability and streaming access can change by date, plan, and location. At the time of the crossover announcement, Paramount+ Premium subscribers could stream live and on demand, while Essential subscribers could watch on demand the day after broadcast (Paramount Press Express announcement). Those were announcement-era terms, not a guarantee of current availability.

Harmon played Gibbs on NCIS for 18 seasons before this special guest appearance, according to the official announcement. His presence as present-day Gibbs gave the prequel a direct link to the character’s later life while the crossover used a case to bridge its 1990s setting with the present-day series.
