Marisa Tomei described the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Aunt May as a reinvention—and recalled discussing what that meant with director Jon Watts. Her account offers a grounded glimpse into how the character was shaped for Spider-Man: No Way Home, without claiming to explain every creative decision behind the film.
What is Spider-Man: No Way Home about?
Spider-Man: No Way Home is a 2021 superhero film directed by Jon Watts and written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. Marisa Tomei is among its cast. Sony’s official film page describes a story in which Peter Parker’s identity as Spider-Man has been revealed, putting his ordinary life and the people close to him at risk. When a spell from Doctor Strange meant to restore Peter’s secret goes wrong, it opens a path for villains from other Spider-Man universes to arrive.
Sony’s FAQ describes it as the third film featuring Tom Holland as Spider-Man and says the story picks up immediately after Spider-Man: Far From Home. That context makes Aunt May’s place in Peter’s life especially relevant: the film’s central danger reaches beyond Peter himself to the people he cares about.
How Marisa Tomei described developing Aunt May
In an interview published by TheWrap on December 16, 2021, Tomei recalled that Robert Downey Jr. had a role in shaping this version of Aunt May. She also said she and Watts talked about the idea of reinvention and what it meant for the character.

- When Dr. Strange?s spell to restore Spider-Man?s identity goes awry, Peter is forced to overcome his greatest challenge yet.
“I think Robert Downey had a lot to do with it. And then [Jon] Watts [the director] and I a lot about, well, I guess the mandate is a reinvention. But what is that? I don’t think anyone is really focused on that, really. There was a lot of bigger fish to fry. So Jon and I did a lot of talking about it.”
TheWrap’s interview with Tomei presents this as her recollection of conversations about the character. It does not specify what those discussions decided, or assign a particular scene or detail to Watts, Downey Jr., or Tomei. The useful point is the collaborative question she remembered: what does reinvention mean for Aunt May in this story?

What Jon Watts’s role is established to be
Sony credits Watts as the film’s director. Tomei’s interview adds her account of talking with him about May’s reinvention. These are distinct facts: the first is a formal credit, while the second is an actor’s description of character-development conversations. They do not establish a particular visual style, editing approach, or how Watts staged any individual scene.
