In an interview with Brown Bag Mornings, Carey recalled that 2Pac greeted her at the 1996 American Music Awards, where she was hosting. HipHopDX reported her recollection: “Well, he said it like ‘Hi, Mariah,’ and I was like [ahhh].” She said the encounter gave her “more than butterflies.”

Carey also said she wanted to keep moving back and forth during the event because of the moment. Looking back on it, she described it as “a pretty major moment for me to say the least,” adding that she loved hip-hop and the memories they were discussing. HipHopDX reported the exchange on August 28, 2025.
Did Mariah Carey and 2Pac ever date?
The reported interview does not establish that they dated or had a romantic relationship. Carey was asked whether they ever had the chance to go on a date, and answered, “I wish.” Complex presented the conversation as a hypothetical about whether the two would have made a power couple; its report also quoted her response as “I wish.” Complex published its account on August 27, 2025.

Why the moment stayed with her
