By April 13, 2026, the story had moved on—Carey had received a third consecutive nomination and was again absent from the inductees. The Hall has not published her vote total or a Carey-specific reason for the outcome, so the record supports a clear chronology, not a claim about why voters passed her over.
What happened to Mariah Carey and the Rock Hall?
Carey appeared on the Hall’s performer nominee lists in 2024, 2025 and 2026. She was not selected for the 2025 class, the omission commonly described as her “second snub” because it followed her second consecutive nomination. The Hall announced eight performer inductees for 2026 on April 13; Carey was not among them. That makes 2026 her third consecutive nomination without induction, not her second.
The sequence is documented in the Hall’s 2024 nominee announcement, 2025 nominee announcement, 2026 nominee announcement and 2026 inductee announcement.
Why wasn’t Mariah Carey inducted?
The Hall has not disclosed Carey’s individual vote total or a specific explanation for her omission. Its public information describes how nominees are chosen and how the voting process works, but does not reveal why any particular nominee did or did not receive enough votes. “Snub” is a common editorial description of the result, not an official Hall category or proof of voters’ motives.

Carey’s résumé is substantial: the Associated Press reported in its 2025 nomination coverage that she had 19 No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100. That dated career figure helps describe her record; it does not establish how Hall voters evaluated it or determine the outcome.
How the Rock Hall selection process works
Nomination and induction are separate steps. The Hall says an artist becomes eligible 25 years after their first commercial recording. A nominating committee selects the candidates, then ballots go to more than 1,200 historians, music-industry members and artists, including living inductees. The five to seven performers with the most votes enter that year’s induction class.
| Part of the process | Role |
|---|---|
| Nominating committee | Selects the nominees who appear on the annual ballot. |
| Voting body | More than 1,200 eligible voters cast ballots; the five to seven performers with the most votes become inductees. |
| Online fan vote | The top five to seven performers form one ballot, which is aggregated with votes from the larger voting body. It is not a direct popular referendum. |
The Hall also says that previously nominated artists who do not receive enough votes must be nominated again to remain eligible for induction. A nomination therefore does not guarantee induction in that year—or in a later year. These mechanics are set out in the Hall’s induction-process FAQ.
How Carey’s career relates to the Hall’s stated criteria
For its 2026 nominee announcement, the Hall identified three broad considerations: impact on music culture, influence on later musicians, and the scope and longevity of an artist’s career and body of work. These are the Hall’s stated criteria, not a published assessment of Carey or an explanation for her omission.

- Impact on music culture: The Hall lists this as a criterion, but its public materials do not specify how Carey’s cultural impact was weighed in the 2026 vote.
- Influence on later musicians: This is also among the stated criteria; the Hall has not published a Carey-specific evaluation of her influence.
- Scope and longevity: The criterion addresses an artist’s career and body of work. The AP’s 2025 report of 19 Hot 100 No. 1 hits is one dated measure of Carey’s commercial record, not a substitute for the Hall’s unpublished deliberations.
John Sykes, Chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, described the 2026 nominee list this way: “This diverse list of talented Nominees recognizes the ever-evolving faces and sounds of Rock & Roll and its continued impact on youth culture”. His statement characterized the slate as a whole; it did not explain Carey’s result.

The phrase captures a particular moment: Carey was nominated for a second consecutive year in 2025 and was not inducted into that class. It should not be used to imply that 2025 remains her latest nomination outcome. The Hall’s 2026 announcement records a third consecutive nomination and another omission, while leaving the reasons and vote totals undisclosed.
