Margo Martindale’s standout roles span the stage, film, drama and comedy, but Mags Bennett in Justified is the clearest award-backed centerpiece: Martindale won the 2011 Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for the performance. This is an editorial selection, not an official or definitive ranking. These ten roles show why her work is so memorable: she can make authority feel dangerous, warmth feel lived-in and even her own celebrity persona a source of comedy.
What are Margo Martindale’s best roles?
The selection weighs award recognition, career significance, distinctiveness, medium and tonal range. The order is an editorial judgment; there is no established consensus ranking. For a first watch, start with Justified for her most celebrated dramatic role, then try The Americans for a contrasting performance or BoJack Horseman for her comic self-parody.

Mags Bennett — Justified
Mags is the strongest choice for the top spot. Martindale won the 2011 Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for the role. The Television Academy’s biography quotes USA Today describing her performance as “smart, chilling, amusing, convincing and unfailingly entertaining.” In a 2025 Television Academy interview, Martindale recalled pursuing the part and said, “It was the best investment I ever made.” Read the Television Academy interview; the award and critical description appear in its biography and credits.
-
Claudia — The Americans
Claudia offers a stark counterpoint to Mags: Martindale’s work on the series is among her award-recognized television performances. AARP’s profile also places The Americans alongside BoJack Horseman, The Good Wife, Sneaky Pete and The Good Fight in discussing her winning-streak television work. AARP’s 2020 profile provides career context.

Truvy — the original stage production of Steel Magnolias
This is a defining early role as well as a stage achievement: Martindale created Truvy in the original production. She later said it launched her movie career because “everyone in Hollywood came to see it.” The Television Academy’s interview preserves her account of the role’s significance. Read the interview.
-
Big Mama — Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
Martindale earned a Tony nomination for playing Big Mama in the revival. The role belongs on this list because it shows her theater work was not limited to originating Truvy; it also brought her recognition in a major revival. The Television Academy’s biography records the nomination.

Mattie Fae — August: Osage County
A festival biography singles out Martindale’s performance in the film, and the Television Academy lists it among her credits. It adds a sharp-edged film role to a list otherwise anchored by television and stage work. The Television Academy’s filmography and the festival biography provide the supporting context.
-
Fictionalized Margo Martindale — BoJack Horseman
The animated series turns Martindale’s identity as a character actor into a comic premise, with a fictionalized version of the actress and the playful “Esteemed Actress” framing. It is a distinctive performance because the joke depends on her public persona while also letting her play an exaggerated version of herself. The festival biography highlights this contrast with Mags Bennett and Claudia.

See the Television Academy’s filmography.
-
Dead Man Walking
Martindale’s film credits also include this drama. The Television Academy’s listed credits establish her appearance, but the cited biography excerpt does not specify her character. Choose by the kind of performance you want to see: Justified for the award-winning dramatic centerpiece, The Americans for a markedly different television role, Steel Magnolias for the stage performance that helped launch her film career, or BoJack Horseman for comic self-awareness.
