What do Maron and Obama discuss?
The episode description says the conversation was recorded in Obama’s Washington, DC, office. Its stated subjects include the podcast’s legacy, the importance of human connection and reasons for optimism. The framing also connects the end of the show with the question of how to navigate a difficult moment. The official episode description outlines those themes.
A conversation, not a fact-finding interview
Maron’s account of the episode makes clear that its purpose was not to probe Obama for facts or conduct a journalistic interview. “It wasn’t a journalistic interview in the sense that I was digging for facts,” Maron wrote in his dispatch about the episode. He describes going to Washington for a second conversation with Obama about what the podcast had meant.

The Associated Press reported Maron’s explanation that Obama was the singular guest who could speak both to the significance of the finale and to moving through a frightening period. That makes the episode a reflective closing conversation, rather than a policy-focused interview. The AP’s October 13, 2025 report places the finale at the end of a 16-year run and describes the show as having produced more than 1,600 episodes.
Why Obama was a fitting final guest
Obama had appeared on WTF once before, in 2015, while he was president. That earlier conversation was Episode 613. The 2025 finale was their second conversation on the podcast and its final numbered episode, Episode 1686. The official Episode 613 page records the earlier appearance.
The contrast between the two episodes gives the finale a built-in sense of return: the same guest reappears a decade later, this time in a conversation explicitly tied to the show’s ending. Maron’s own description emphasizes the podcast’s significance and the human questions raised by the moment, not a fresh examination of Obama’s presidency.
