This reviewer covers the Classical Period music concepts identified for Grade 9 MAPEH and explains how to use the ballroom-dance portion without assuming it belongs to every school’s third-quarter syllabus. DepEd materials support study of Classical music in Grade 9; the placement of social and ballroom dance varies across the cited curriculum materials.
What this MAPEH 9 reviewer covers
The Classical Period section is a focused study guide, not a claim that one PDF is an official or universal DepEd third-quarter reviewer. The DepEd Learning Portal lists a Grade 9 MAPEH Music teaching presentation published May 7, 2020, with objectives involving historical context, listening, musical elements, performance practices, and sonata-allegro form (DepEd Learning Portal: Classical Period teaching material). The Grade 9 curriculum guide also sets out Classical Period competencies (DepEd Learning Portal: Grade 9 Music curriculum guide).
Use the reviewer to check understanding of these five areas:
- Historical and cultural context
- Perceptive listening to selected Classical-period works
- Musical elements and sonata-allegro form
- Performance setting and the roles of composers, performers, and audience
- Ballroom dance, if it is part of the learner’s class materials
Classical Period music: key ideas to review
Historical and cultural background
Grade 9 learning objectives ask students to relate Classical music to its historical and cultural background. A useful review answer should connect what is heard to its period rather than simply naming a composer or instrument. The DepEd activity sheet identifies the Classical Period as 1750–1820 and describes performance settings that included aristocratic courts and public concert halls (DepEd activity sheet: Performance Practices during the Classical Period).

Listening for musical elements
Listen to selected works with a specific task: notice musical elements, then describe what you hear using accurate terms. The Grade 9 objectives call for perceptive listening and description of musical elements, but the cited materials do not prescribe one universal listening list for every class. Use the works assigned by the teacher.
Sonata-allegro form
Sonata-allegro form is a named analysis objective in the Grade 9 Classical Period materials. In a review, be ready to identify the form’s role in a piece and explain how musical ideas are presented and developed, using the teacher’s lesson and listening examples. Do not treat recognition of a title or period date alone as analysis.

Performance practices
Study more than the music itself: Grade 9 materials include the setting, composition, and the roles of composers, performers, and audience. The activity sheet’s references to courts and public concert halls provide context for considering where music was performed and how performance related to its audience.
How to review effectively
- Build a context note. Write the period dates, then add the settings named in your lesson and one sentence linking context to the music.
- Listen actively. For each assigned selection, note audible musical elements and support each observation with something you actually hear.
- Map the form. Use the class example to identify how sonata-allegro form organizes musical ideas; follow the labels and explanations used by your teacher.
- Review performance roles. Explain what the setting, composer, performers, and audience contribute to understanding a performance.
- Check the dance topic against your class materials. Study the ballroom-dance section if it appears in your current module, class notes, or teacher’s assessment coverage.
Where ballroom dance fits—and why the quarter label needs checking
The ballroom-dance phrase in this reviewer should not be read as proof that ballroom dance is a nationally uniform Grade 9 third-quarter topic. The DepEd curriculum appendix places Grade 9 third-quarter dance content under dances of the Muslim South and Grade 9 fourth-quarter dance content under theatrical dances; it places social and ballroom dances in the Grade 8 fourth-quarter row (DepEd curriculum appendix: Dance Contents). Separately, a DepEd Learning Portal catalog entry lists Social and Ballroom Dances in a Grade 9 Physical Education lesson plan (DepEd Learning Portal: Grade 9 PE lesson plan).

Those materials show that dance placement can differ by resource or school context. They do not establish that the exact PDF named in this title is an official DepEd publication or used everywhere. Check the current module, quarter plan, or teacher’s instructions for your school before treating ballroom dance as required third-quarter coverage.
