For a Grade 9 MAPEH third-quarter review of Romantic music, focus on three connected tasks: identify the period’s musical forms, listen for its musical elements, and relate the music to its historical and artistic context. Frédéric Chopin’s Nocturne in E-flat Major, Op. 9 No. 2 is one listening example named in DepEd’s SY 2025–2026 activity sheet. The exact PDF named in the search title could not be verified, so this guide follows the documented Grade 9 Quarter 3 Romantic-music materials rather than claiming to reproduce that file.

What to review for Grade 9 Quarter 3 music

DepEd’s Grade 9 Quarter 3 module listing covers composers, listening, performance practice, musical elements, evaluation, performance, and connections between Romantic music and other art forms. A useful exam review therefore goes beyond memorizing composers or dates: be ready to recognize a form, describe what you hear, and explain a musical or historical connection. The current DepEd activity sheet labels its period scope “Forms and Characteristics of Romantic Music (1820–1900).” DepEd Learning Resources Management and Development System

Recognize the Romantic forms

The SY 2025–2026 teacher note asks learners to match several forms with their descriptions. Use these as student-level recognition cues, not as exhaustive definitions. DepEd, Q3-TN-MA03

  • Art song (Lied): a solo song with piano accompaniment, often based on poetry.
  • Character piece: a short piano work centered on one mood or idea.
  • Opera: staged drama combining singing, acting, and orchestra.
  • Symphonic poem: a one-movement orchestral work that depicts a story or idea.
  • Symphony: an orchestral form included in the activity’s list. The teacher note’s answer key presents it as longer and more emotional than Classical symphonies; treat that as the sheet’s comparison, not a universal definition.

Listen to Chopin through the seven musical elements

DepEd’s learning activity sheet names Chopin’s Nocturne in E-flat Major, Op. 9 No. 2, alongside Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake and Schubert’s Serenade (Ständchen). Its learning target is to identify and describe melody, harmony, rhythm, dynamics, texture, timbre, and form. The sheet asks learners to make observations; it does not supply a completed analysis of the Chopin piece. DepEd, Q3-LAS-MA01

  • Melody: Is it lyrical, emotional, or virtuosic? Identify a specific phrase or passage that supports your description.
  • Harmony: Does it sound rich or dramatic? Notice where the accompaniment or chord changes affect the mood.
  • Rhythm: Does the beat feel steady, flexible, or fast-paced? Listen for changes rather than relying on a single overall label.
  • Dynamics: Where does the sound become softer or louder?
  • Texture: Is there one prominent melody with accompaniment (homophonic texture), or do several independent melodic lines interact (polyphonic texture)?
  • Timbre: What sound colors do you hear—piano, strings, or a larger orchestra?
  • Form: Does the musical organization suggest binary, ternary, theme and variations, or sonata form? Use the activity sheet’s named examples as terms to recognize, and support your choice with what you hear.

Connect the music to its historical setting

A separate SY 2025–2026 DepEd activity sheet summarizes the period by connecting Romantic music with industrial change, nationalism, political upheaval, and Romanticism in other arts. It is a teaching-sheet overview rather than a complete history of the period. DepEd, Q3-LAS-MA05

  • Industrial change: the sheet links the Industrial Revolution with new instruments and concert halls.
  • Nationalism: composers drew on folk melodies and dances; the sheet names Poland, Russia, and Hungary as examples.
  • Political events: it places the 1848 European revolutions in a context of musical expressions of freedom, struggle, and heroism.
  • Connections across the arts: Romantic music is presented alongside poetry, painting, and drama, with emotion and imagination as shared concerns.

The sheet names Chopin, Liszt, Wagner, and Tchaikovsky in its historical discussion. When explaining a connection, make the link explicit—for example, identify a national or poetic idea and describe how a musical choice might help express it. Do not treat the sheet’s short overview as proof that every Romantic work has the same subject or sound.

Use a focused exam-review checklist

  1. Practice the terms: match art song, character piece, opera, symphonic poem, and symphony to their basic descriptions.
  2. Listen once for an overall impression: note the mood, performers or instruments, and any obvious change in intensity.
  3. Listen again by element: record a concrete observation for melody, harmony, rhythm, dynamics, texture, timbre, and form.
  4. Support each judgment: refer to a phrase, change, accompaniment pattern, or instrumental sound instead of writing only “emotional” or “dramatic.”
  5. Prepare for more than listening questions: the Quarter 3 module listing also includes performance practice and evaluation, so review what a task asks you to perform, assess, or reflect on—not just what to identify.
  6. Make one context connection: relate a work or musical feature to the historical or cross-art themes covered in the activity sheet.

The DepEd LR portal also lists the Grade 9 Quarter 3 Music self-learning modules as Modules 1–8, published on August 15, 2022. Another portal entry, “Music 9: Unit 3 – Music of the Romantic Period,” published August 15, 2014, describes a 39-page module on instrumental Romantic music. Those listings provide additional curriculum context, but the available evidence does not establish that either is the exact PDF meant by the title.
