Manoj Kumar, the Hindi-film actor and director whose patriotic screen persona earned him the name “Bharat Kumar,” died in Mumbai on April 4, 2025, aged 87. Born Harikishan Giri Goswami, he was best known for films including Shaheed, Upkar, Purab Aur Paschim, Roti Kapda Aur Makaan and Kranti. He received the Padma Shri in 1992 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2015.
Who was Manoj Kumar?
Manoj Kumar was the screen name of Harikishan Giri Goswami, born in Abbottabad on July 24, 1937, when the city was part of undivided India and before it became part of Pakistan. His family moved to Delhi during Partition. He later went to Bombay to pursue films, without industry connections, and initially wrote scripts in Urdu, according to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting’s 2025 tribute.
He began with a small part in Fashion (1957). Accounts differ on which role marked his leading-man breakthrough: Scroll identifies Kaanch Ki Gudiya (1961), while The National describes Woh Kaun Thi? (1964) as his breakout acting role. Those milestones need not be treated as the same claim.
Why was he called “Bharat Kumar”?
Kumar became closely identified with patriotic Hindi films, and audiences and the press came to associate his screen image with the nation. That persona earned him the nickname “Bharat Kumar.” His films often brought national identity and civic themes into popular drama rather than treating patriotism as a subject separate from entertainment.

How did Upkar come about?
Kumar’s path from actor to director was tied to Shaheed and a conversation with Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri. The Ministry tribute recounts that Shastri, after attending a screening of Shaheed, asked him to make a film inspired by “Jai Jawan Jai Kisan.” Kumar developed the story for Upkar on the train journey back to Mumbai.

In an interview with Rediff.com quoted by The Indian Express, Kumar recalled: “I never intended to be a director in the first place. I became one by default when during Shaheed I had to direct the film unofficially. Then Lal Bahadur Shastri raised the slogan of Jai Jawan Jai Kisan. That’s how I made Upkar,”
What were his later films and honors?
Kumar continued to act and direct after his early patriotic landmarks. The National reports that he quit acting after Maidan-E-Jung (1995), then directed his son Kunal Goswami in Jai Hind (1999), which it identifies as his last project. The same obituary reports a National Film Award and seven Filmfare Awards but does not specify their categories or, for the National Film Award, its year.
