Why early reports said the cause was unknown
Mandisa’s death was announced on April 19, 2024, one day after she died. At that point, her representative confirmed the death but said that a cause had not yet been determined. The Associated Press and the Los Angeles Times both reported that no cause or additional medical details were available at the time. [c002][c003]
That preliminary information was later superseded by the autopsy finding reported in June. The sequence is important: the April statements reflected what was known immediately after her death, while the later reports described the medical examiner’s conclusion after the death investigation.
What “class III obesity” means
Class III obesity is a medical classification generally associated with a body-mass index of 40 or higher, or a BMI of 35 or higher when significant obesity-related health conditions are also present. Obesity can contribute to serious health problems, including type 2 diabetes and heart disease. However, those are general medical possibilities—not confirmed diagnoses in Mandisa’s case. BMI is a screening measure rather than a complete description of an individual’s health. In this article, the classification is included because it was part of the medical examiner’s reported wording, not as a judgment about Mandisa’s body or character.
What investigators did—and did not—report
Public reporting about the autopsy and investigation included several additional details:
- TMZ reported that the autopsy found no signs of neck trauma.
- TMZ reported that toxicology did not show anything abnormal.
- The manner of death was listed as natural.
- The Los Angeles Times reported that Tennessee police had previously said there were no signs of foul play.
Together, those reports support a restrained description: investigators publicly reported no evidence of trauma, abnormal toxicology, or foul play, and the medical examiner classified the death as natural. Entertainment Tonight reported that friends found Mandisa and that she had last been known alive approximately three weeks earlier. Did depression or grief cause Mandisa’s death?
No. Mandisa spoke publicly about depression, grief, body image, and difficult periods in her life, including in her 2022 memoir, Out of the Dark: My Journey Through the Shadows to Find God’s Joy. But those subjects should not be presented as the cause of her death.
Her memoir’s publisher describes a book about her career, faith, grief, depression, and the shadows she experienced. Mandisa went on to become one of contemporary Christian music’s best-known performers.
