On April 19, 2024, Mandisa’s representative confirmed her death to ABC News and said, “At this time we do not know the cause of death or any further details.” That statement reflected what was known publicly at the time of the announcement.

On June 4, 2024, the Los Angeles Times reported, citing an autopsy report obtained by People, that Mandisa died from complications of class III obesity and that the manner of death was natural. This later, autopsy-based account should not be confused with the representative’s initial statement.
From American Idol to Christian music
Mandisa was born near Sacramento, California, and grew up singing in church, according to the Associated Press. In 2006, she competed on the fifth season of American Idol and finished ninth. The exposure led into a recording career in contemporary Christian music.

- 2007: Her debut album, True Beauty, received a Grammy nomination, the AP reported.
- 2013: She released Overcomer, described by the AP as her fifth album.
- 2014: Overcomer won the Grammy for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album.
Her public account of depression and faith
In her 2022 memoir, Out of the Dark: My Journey Through the Shadows to Find God’s Joy, Mandisa wrote about severe depression, weight-related challenges, the pandemic, and her faith, according to the AP. Those experiences were part of her own public story; they do not explain or establish the cause of her death.
David Pierce, K-Love’s chief media officer, reflected on her openness in a tribute reported by ABC News: “Mandisa struggled, and she was vulnerable enough to share that with us, which helped us talk about our own struggles.”
