In a 2024 interview with PEOPLE, she recalled that Michelle Phillips found Day and helped arrange a meeting. Owen said the encounter eventually brought her closure, while the account of their biological relationship remains her recollection rather than an independently established finding in the sources cited here.
How Owen learned Chuck Day’s name
Owen was seven when her mother, Mamas & the Papas singer Cass Elliot, died on July 29, 1974. As Owen recalled to PEOPLE, she had imagined that her “real dad” might one day appear. She did not know the name Chuck Day until her 19th birthday.
Owen said Michelle Phillips later told her that former bandmates John Phillips and Denny Doherty had been asked whether they knew who Owen’s father was. According to the interview, Michelle located Day through notices in music magazines. He was a bassist who had performed with Cass and was then living in Marin County. Michelle helped Owen travel to meet him.
What Owen remembers about meeting Day
Owen described the first encounter as surreal: “The second I saw him, I knew we shared DNA.” That is her recollection of the meeting, not DNA-test evidence presented in the PEOPLE report. She later described its personal effect: “It gave me closure. I knew I belonged to his DNA and there was a lot of healing in the end.”

The distinction matters: PEOPLE’s account identifies Day as Owen’s biological father through her story and memories, but the sources cited here do not independently verify paternity. The meeting’s importance to Owen, however, is clear in her own description of it.
Her family included the people who raised her
After Cass’s death, Owen was raised by her aunt Leah Kunkel and Leah’s husband, Russ. Owen has described having four parental figures: her biological parents and the aunt and uncle who cared for her. She said she did not feel that she had grown up without a father figure. Her account separates the question of biological identity from the everyday role of being raised and supported.

PEOPLE also reports that Jim Hendricks’s name appeared on Owen’s birth certificate. Owen said she understood Cass and Hendricks’s marriage to have been platonic and intended to keep him out of the draft. That is Owen’s reported understanding, not an independently verified account of the marriage’s legal circumstances.
