The documented timeline begins with Brad’s Drink in 1893, followed by the Pepsi-Cola name in 1898 and Diet Pepsi in 1964. Later milestones include Nitro Pepsi’s planned U.S. rollout in 2022, a Pepsi Zero Sugar formula update in 2023, and Pepsi Prebiotic Cola’s nationwide U.S. launch in 2026. This is a timeline of selected milestones, not a verified list of every Pepsi-Cola product or a complete worldwide release order.
How to read this timeline
“Pepsi product” can refer to PepsiCo’s many food and beverage brands. This timeline is narrower: it covers drinks sold under the Pepsi-Cola brand, using dates and distinctions documented in PepsiCo materials. It also separates a product’s release from later events such as a formula change or an appearance in a portfolio list.
The available company records establish some major milestones but do not supply a comprehensive global catalog of flavors, formulas, package types, limited editions, regional launches, discontinuations, and returns. A date below therefore marks a documented event—not necessarily the first sale in every market.
Pepsi-Cola products and milestones in chronological order
| Date | Product or milestone | What the date establishes |
|---|---|---|
| 1893 | Brad’s Drink | PepsiCo’s corporate history says pharmacist Caleb Bradham created the drink in New Bern, North Carolina, and initially called it Brad’s Drink. This is the beverage’s precursor, before the Pepsi-Cola name. |
| August 28, 1898 | Pepsi-Cola name | PepsiCo dates Bradham’s renaming of the drink to this day. Its 2023 anniversary announcement also gives August 28, 1898 as the naming date. |
| 1902 | Pepsi-Cola trademark | PepsiCo’s corporate history dates the trademarking of the name to 1902. This is a brand milestone, not a separate beverage launch. |
| 1964 | Diet Pepsi | PepsiCo’s 2007 annual report records the introduction of Diet Pepsi in 1964, a major documented extension of the Pepsi-Cola line. |
| By 2013; first-release date not established | Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, Pepsi MAX, and Pepsi NEXT | A 2013 PepsiCo bottle announcement lists these names in the Pepsi trademark portfolio. It confirms they were represented in the portfolio by then, but does not establish when Pepsi MAX or Pepsi NEXT—or any other name in the list—first launched. |
| February 23, 2022 announcement; planned U.S. nationwide rollout beginning March 28, 2022 | Nitro Pepsi: Draft Cola and Vanilla Draft Cola | PepsiCo announced Nitro Pepsi on February 23 and said nationwide U.S. availability would start March 28. The two named versions were nitrogen-infused; each can included a nitrogen widget. PepsiCo recommended serving it cold and pouring it into a glass. |
| January 13, 2023 | Pepsi Zero Sugar formula update | PepsiCo announced a new U.S. formula using a new sweetener system. This dates the announced formula change, not the first release of Pepsi Zero Sugar or Pepsi MAX. |
| Fall 2025 limited online debut; February 17, 2026 nationwide U.S. launch | Pepsi Prebiotic Cola: Original Cola and Cherry Vanilla | PepsiCo’s 2025 announcement planned an online debut in fall and retail availability in early 2026. Its February 17, 2026 announcement said the limited online debut had taken place the prior fall and announced nationwide U.S. store and online availability. PepsiCo stated that each serving contains 30 calories, 5 g of sugar, and 3 g of prebiotic fiber. |
What the timeline says about Pepsi’s early history
Brad’s Drink predates the Pepsi-Cola name by five years, so it belongs in the chronology as the drink’s origin rather than as a product originally sold under that name. PepsiCo’s corporate history, published September 17, 2026, reports that 7,968 gallons of Pepsi syrup were sold in the first year of operation, that sales exceeded 100,000 gallons by 1907, and that more than 250 companies in 24 states were bottling it by 1910. These are company-reported historical figures.

Why the recent dates are not all launch dates
Nitro Pepsi: announcement and planned rollout
The February 23, 2022 date is the announcement date; PepsiCo described nationwide U.S. availability as beginning March 28. The product’s nitrogen infusion and pour-into-a-glass serving guidance were part of its announced experience. Then-Pepsi VP of Marketing Todd Kaplan said, “With this in mind, we wanted to come up with a new way for people to enjoy delicious Pepsi cola, with a new experience around the bubbles.” This was a statement in PepsiCo’s product announcement.
Pepsi Zero Sugar: a formula update
The January 2023 announcement concerns a changed U.S. formula and sweetener system. It should not be read as the original launch date for Pepsi Zero Sugar, and it does not establish the original release date of Pepsi MAX.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is not established by these dates
- A complete release order for every Pepsi-Cola flavor, formula, package, or limited edition worldwide.
- First-release dates for Pepsi MAX and Pepsi NEXT; the 2013 portfolio listing is evidence only that those names were included by then.
- First-market dates for caffeine-free, regional, seasonal, discontinued, or returning products not dated in the cited company materials.
- That every product in this timeline remains available today; the dated announcements establish historical or announced availability, not current stock in every market.
Accordingly, this chronology is best read as selected, documented landmarks from PepsiCo materials—not as an exhaustive inventory or proof of a single release sequence across all countries.
