King Charles does not have a privately owned jet called Vespina. The aircraft commonly described as his “private jet” is RAF Voyager ZZ336, a military-operated Airbus A330-200 used for official state transport. Known as Vespina, it belongs to a wider RAF fleet and retains its air-to-air refuelling capability.
What is King Charles’ RAF Voyager?
Vespina is the name given to RAF Voyager ZZ336, an Airbus A330-200 operated by the Royal Air Force. The RAF describes the Voyager type as both an air-to-air refuelling tanker and a strategic transport aircraft. The RAF’s Voyager page gives an overview of the fleet and its roles.
The aircraft was refurbished to carry government ministers, senior members of the Royal Family and delegations on trade, diplomatic and other official missions. It returned to RAF Brize Norton after the work and remained certified for refuelling and personnel transport, according to the RAF’s June 2020 announcement.
Is Vespina the King’s personal private jet?
No. “King Charles’ private jet” is a familiar shorthand, but official sources describe ZZ336 as an RAF aircraft used for official transport, not as the King’s personal property. It operates alongside the wider RAF Voyager fleet.

A parliamentary answer published on 10 October 2025 says ZZ336 may be tasked under Operation VESPINA for a Head of State or Head of Government, on state business only. That qualification distinguishes official state travel from personal or private use.
What can the aircraft do besides carry VIP passengers?
Vespina retains the Voyager’s tanker role as well as its transport role. The RAF says one Voyager is modified for long-range VIP transport but keeps full air-to-air refuelling capability. Standard KC.Mk 2 aircraft have two underwing refuelling pods; KC.Mk 3 aircraft also have a centreline hose for larger aircraft.

The type’s cabin can carry passengers while fuel is held in its existing tanks. The Voyager fleet also supports aeromedical evacuation; the RAF lists a configuration for up to 40 stretchers and three critical-care patients. These are capabilities of the type or fleet, not a description of Vespina’s exact cabin arrangement.
How large is the RAF Voyager fleet?
The RAF describes a core fleet of eight military-registered Voyagers and one civilian-registered aircraft, with five additional A330-200s used commercially by AirTanker that can be recalled for military use. AirTanker owns, manages and maintains aircraft under the arrangement and provides infrastructure, support and training, according to the RAF fleet page.

The wider arrangement has historical contract context: in 2011, the Ministry of Defence announced a 27-year Private Finance Initiative worth £10.5 billion for 14 Voyager aircraft and a complete support package. That figure is the contract value announced at the time, not a current annual cost or the price of royal flights. See the Ministry of Defence announcement.

The following are RAF-published Voyager type or fleet specifications. They should not be read as a complete specification for Vespina’s VIP cabin or as evidence that maximum passenger and fuel capacities can be carried simultaneously.

A UK parliamentary written answer dated 17 June 2020 gave a forecast of approximately £900,000 to complete the VIP Voyager repaint, including related costs. It was a forecast for the repaint, not the total cost of converting the aircraft or an operating cost. The figure appears in written question 60814.

The available official figures do not establish a current per-flight cost or an itemized total for individual royal journeys. The 2011 £10.5 billion Voyager contract covers a broader, long-term fleet and support arrangement, rather than a direct charge for King Charles’ travel.
Has the RAF Voyager flown on sustainable aviation fuel?
Yes. The RAF reported that an operational Voyager completed a demonstration flight using 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) on 16 November 2022, which it described as the first UK military air-transport flight of its size powered entirely by SAF. The RAF said waste-based SAF can reduce lifecycle carbon emissions by up to 80% compared with conventional fuel. That is the RAF’s 2022 lifecycle comparison, not a measured reduction for a Vespina royal trip, and the demonstration does not establish that Vespina routinely flies on 100% SAF.
