Mahatma Gandhi became known for making nonviolent resistance a disciplined form of political action. His method, satyagraha, called for opposing injustice through truth and nonviolence while accepting suffering rather than inflicting it. Its development can be traced from his organizing in South Africa to campaigns in India, including the 1930 Salt March. Gandhi’s own writings and the historical record show both the ambition of this approach and its dependence on collective discipline.
How Gandhi developed satyagraha
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born in Porbandar in 1869 and studied law in England. He went to South Africa in 1893, where he encountered racial discrimination and became involved in Indian political organizing. The Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti chronology places the beginning of a satyagraha campaign in Johannesburg in 1906; Gandhi returned to India in 1915. Gandhi Smriti’s chronology and the Sabarmati Ashram timeline trace this movement across two countries.
In India, Gandhi’s political work included the Champaran, Ahmedabad and Kheda campaigns, opposition to the Rowlatt legislation, noncooperation and civil disobedience. These were not simply episodes in a fixed plan: his method took shape through political struggle and the practical problem of sustaining mass action without violence.
What did Gandhi mean by satyagraha?
Satyagraha is often translated as “truth-force” or “soul-force.” In Gandhi’s account, it was more than passive refusal and not a synonym for every protest. It meant resisting injustice actively through truth and nonviolence, without trying to injure an opponent. Participants were expected to accept suffering themselves rather than inflict it.

In his selected writing on the Gita and satyagraha, Gandhi wrote: “Non-violence in its dynamic condition means conscious suffering. It does not mean meek submission to the will of the evil-doer, but it means the pitting of one’s whole soul against the will of the tyrant.” Read the selected writing for the passage in context.
Gandhi also rejected the idea that nonviolence was an ethic reserved for spiritual elites: “The religion of non-violence is not meant merely for the rishis and saints. It is meant for the common people as well.” This is from the same selected writing on the Gita and satyagraha, not a quotation attributed here to a particular speech.

How Gandhi used nonviolent resistance
Gandhi’s campaigns sought to turn a moral principle into collective political pressure. Organizing, public protest and civil disobedience could challenge a law or policy while keeping the method of resistance central to the political aim. That required participants to maintain discipline even when confronted with repression or when a campaign drew in large crowds.
The historical record does not show uninterrupted nonviolence by every participant. After violence broke out during the 1919 movement, Gandhi suspended it and concluded that people needed training for nonviolent agitation, according to the Mani Bhavan Gandhi Sangrahalaya biography. In 1922, after violence at Chauri Chaura, the Gandhi Smriti chronology records that he suspended mass disobedience. These decisions reveal the tension in his method: nonviolence was both an ethical commitment and a strategic discipline, and mass action could be halted if that discipline failed.

What was the Salt March?
The Salt March was a 1930 campaign of civil disobedience against British rule’s salt law. Gandhi and volunteers set out from Sabarmati and broke the law at Dandi, as recorded by the Gandhi Smriti chronology. Salt made the campaign’s challenge concrete: participants could defy a specific law through a public act rather than leave opposition at the level of a general declaration.

For Gandhi’s own words, two useful starting points are his autobiography and Hind Swaraj (also published as Indian Home Rule). They serve different purposes: the autobiography is a retrospective account of his life and experiments, while Hind Swaraj presents a political argument.
