Why is Mahaparinirvan Diwas celebrated on 6th December? Because Dr. B. R. Ambedkar died on 6 December 1956. The annual observance commemorates his death anniversary and remembers his work for equality and against caste-based discrimination.
What is Mahaparinirvan Diwas?
Mahaparinirvan Diwas is the annual observance marking Ambedkar’s death anniversary. The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment describes the day as a tribute to his life and legacy as a leader, thinker and reformer who worked for equality and opposed caste-based discrimination. It is therefore more than a date on the calendar: it is an occasion to remember his public work and ideas.
The Ministry called the 2024 observance Ambedkar’s 69th death anniversary. That count refers to the 2024 event, not to the current year’s anniversary.
Why is 6 December important for Dr. B. R. Ambedkar?
Government of India biographical material records that Ambedkar died on 6 December 1956. Since the observance commemorates his death anniversary, it is held on that date each year. The date is tied to this event in his life, rather than to a separate anniversary or a changing calendar calculation.

What does “Mahaparinirvan” mean?
Government of India material uses “Mahaparinirvan” in the name of the observance and says Ambedkar attained “Mahaparinirvan” on 6 December 1956. The sources cited here establish that official usage but do not explain the term’s precise Buddhist doctrinal meaning or why it is applied to Ambedkar.
