The duo’s best-known song, “Up Jumps da Boogie,” featured Aaliyah and Missy Elliott. Magoo died at 50 in 2023; when his death was reported, the cause was still under investigation.
Who was Magoo?
Magoo was the stage name of Melvin Barcliff, a rapper who grew up in southern Virginia. His musical connections there included Timothy Mosley and other artists who helped shape the region’s hip-hop scene. In the early 1990s, Barcliff co-founded the short-lived group Surrounded by Idiots (S.B.I.) and joined DeVante Swing’s Swing Mob and Da Bassment Cru collective, according to the Associated Press.
After those groups dissolved, Barcliff and Mosley formed the duo Timbaland & Magoo in 1995, the Associated Press reported. Their partnership put Magoo alongside a producer and artist who would become known for a distinctive, rhythm-forward sound, while also connecting him to Virginia peers including Missy Elliott and Pharrell Williams.
Timbaland & Magoo’s albums and defining song
The duo released three albums on Blackground Records. Their debut introduced their partnership to a broad audience; the later records continued it with changing collaborators.

A partnership Magoo described as inseparable
Magoo spoke of his bond with Timbaland as central to his musical identity. The Guardian, in its August 14, 2023 obituary, quoted him speaking to Billboard in 1997: “I couldn’t conceive of embarking on a solo career without Timbaland.” The remark captures the close creative partnership behind their records, rather than a solo career that happened to include occasional collaboration.

Magoo’s place in Virginia hip-hop
Magoo’s career is best understood through the network he helped build and sustain: early connections in southern Virginia, time in S.B.I. and Swing Mob, and a long-running partnership with Timbaland. Their records also brought him into collaboration with artists such as Aaliyah and Missy Elliott. That combination made Magoo more than the second name in a duo: he was part of a regional musical community whose members’ paths crossed as Virginia hip-hop reached a national audience.
