The live-action Magic: The Gathering movie is still in development. In February 2026, filmmaker Matt Johnson said the project was “very much full speed ahead”; that is an encouraging status update, not a release announcement. No release date, cast, plot synopsis or public production schedule had been announced in the latest project overview, dated October 6, 2026.
What is the status of the Magic: The Gathering movie?
Hasbro Entertainment and Legendary Entertainment announced their partnership to develop a live-action Magic: The Gathering feature in February 2025, according to Draftsim’s project overview. The project remains in development.
Johnson’s precise wording, reported by Nerdist on February 6, 2026, was: “As of today, as of this conversation, it’s very much full speed ahead.” Nerdist attributed the comment to an interview with MovieWeb. In a separate July 29, 2026 profile, Vulture described Johnson as developing the Magic adaptation for Legendary.
Together, those reports indicate that work is continuing. They do not establish when filming will begin or when audiences will see the movie.

Is Matt Johnson officially directing it?
Johnson is the filmmaker publicly associated with the adaptation, and his comments and Vulture’s profile support describing him as attached to or reported to direct. However, Draftsim’s October 6, 2026 overview says the studios had not officially announced a director credit. It is more accurate to call him the reported director or filmmaker developing the project than to present the role as a formal studio announcement.
Vulture reports that Johnson will inherit parts of the production apparatus used on Dune, including storyboard artists, costume designers and locations. The profile also says a trilogy could follow “if the cards fall right.” That is a conditional possibility, not confirmation that a trilogy has been approved.

Is this the same project as the Netflix animated series?
No. The Hasbro–Legendary project is a live-action feature. It is separate from the Netflix animated Magic: The Gathering series. Mark Rosewater made that distinction in a January 9, 2026 Blogatog post, saying, “We have a deal with Legendary, so things are happening there.” Rosewater’s post refers to the Netflix show separately from the Legendary deal.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does “full speed ahead” mean for viewers?
It means Johnson described the project as actively moving forward when asked in February 2026. It does not mean production has started, that a trailer is imminent, or that a release window has been set. The most reliable public picture is still a live-action feature in development, with key details—including its cast, story, schedule and distribution—unannounced.
