Its main set became legal in Standard as part of Wizards of the Coast’s 2025 decision to make new Universes Beyond sets legal in all Constructed formats. The full release brought characters and material from all 16 mainline FINAL FANTASY games into Magic, but not every FINAL FANTASY-branded card or product is Standard legal.
What changed for Magic formats?
The key change was a shift in how Wizards handles new Universes Beyond sets—Magic releases built around other entertainment properties. Wizards Play Network announced that, starting in 2025, new Universes Beyond sets would be legal in all Constructed formats, including Standard. The main FINAL FANTASY set, code FIN, was therefore Standard legal at launch, rather than being limited to formats such as Commander or Modern. Wizards Play Network’s February 2025 announcement describes the policy; Wizards’ release notes list FIN among the permitted Standard sets.
Not every FINAL FANTASY product is Standard legal
The release included cards with different set codes and legality. The Commander cards (FIC) and Through the Ages cards (FCA) were not made Standard legal simply by sharing the FINAL FANTASY branding. Wizards’ collecting guide says those cards are legal in Commander, Legacy, and Vintage, while individual reprints retain any formats where they were already legal. Cards outside the main set—including Commander-deck cards and Special Guests—can remain Eternal-legal or follow the reprinted card’s existing legality. Check a card’s set and individual legality rather than assuming the whole crossover enters Standard. Wizards’ collecting guide explains the set codes and product distinctions.
What was in the FINAL FANTASY release?
The main FIN set contained 309 cards and drew from all 16 mainline FINAL FANTASY games. Square Enix described the scope as characters from every mainline game, while the cards also translate familiar items, monsters, summons, rivals, and story moments into Magic. Square Enix said the full release included more than 100 legendary creature cards. Its May 2025 announcement introduced the crossover’s breadth, and Wizards’ collecting guide details the card treatments and set structure.

Boosters, beginner products, and display boxes

A Starter Kit came with two ready-to-play decks and a Play Guide, making it the most direct entry point for someone learning Magic. Bundles and Scene Boxes rounded out the product lineup, with the latter combining boosters and displayable narrative art. The official product page lists the range.

When did it release?
The tabletop set released globally on June 13, 2025, after prerelease events held June 6–12. Wizards listed June 10, 2025 as its Arena release date. These are historical launch dates, not upcoming events. Wizards Play Network’s schedule gives the tabletop dates; the product page lists Arena availability.
Some products arrived later: Wizards’ collecting guide documents a December 5, 2025 release for several Scene Boxes, the Chocobo Bundle, and FINAL FANTASY VII Commander Deck – Game Edition. That Game Edition included the Limit Break Commander deck, a foil Cloud, Midgar Mercenary promo, and a code to redeem the original FINAL FANTASY VII. Wizards said the deck was mechanically identical to its original release and that the Game Edition was English-only. The guide’s launch-era U.S. MSRPs are historical list prices, not current street prices or confirmation of present availability.

What rules update accompanied the set?
Wizards also updated how Sagas with no chapter abilities work, effective with the FINAL FANTASY release. Previously, the rules treated a Saga’s maximum chapter number as zero when it had no chapter abilities. That led to an unintuitive result: lore counters could cause it to be sacrificed by a state-based action, and it would receive the normal turn-based action of adding a lore counter at the start of the first main phase. Under the update, a Saga with no chapter abilities is not subject to that sacrifice action and does not get that first-main-phase lore counter. The change is documented in Wizards’ release notes.
