Its strongest idea is treating Derry’s history as part of the horror; its main risk is that a sprawling cast and multiple storylines can pull focus from that central dread. The series premiered October 26, 2025, and is based on Stephen King’s novel while expanding the vision of the two Muschietti films. Stephen King’s official series page lists it as available through HBO streaming; access may differ by region.
Does Welcome to Derry live up to the praise?
The series’ most persuasive case is not that it makes Pennywise bigger, but that it makes Derry feel older and more disturbing. It draws on the unanswered histories and incidents around the town, giving the setting a role beyond being a backdrop for the next encounter with the clown. That ambition makes the show a meaningful expansion of King’s world when its historical unease is in the foreground.
That same expansion can work against it. A wider mythology and several character threads create room for a fuller portrait of Derry, but they can also dilute momentum and make the story feel less focused than the simple, primal terror of the premise. The central question is whether each strand deepens the town’s menace or merely adds more franchise material. Critical response has split along similar lines: Lucy Buglass’s TechRadar review welcomed the expansion, while Brian Tallerico’s RogerEbert.com review was more skeptical about the series’ place in the wider King franchise. Rotten Tomatoes’ season page records a range of critical views, including praise for scares and reservations about story balance.
So “on par with King’s best” is a high bar, not a settled verdict. The show’s strongest achievement is its attempt to turn the town’s accumulated violence into atmosphere and mythology. Whether that ambition fully pays off depends on how much a viewer values connective lore against a tighter, more concentrated horror story.

What makes the historical setting matter?
Creator Andy Muschietti has described the project as an effort to answer questions left open by the novel. In an interview with Lucy Buglass for TechRadar, he said, “The book is full of enigmas and questions,” and called his own curiosity the main motivation for telling the story. He specifically named the Black Spot and Bradley Gang incidents, as well as Pennywise’s origins.
That approach gives Welcome to Derry a distinctive purpose: it is interested in the town’s recurring horrors, not only in the mechanics of one monster’s appearance. The historical material can make the evil feel embedded in Derry’s past, giving viewers more to consider than a sequence of scares. It is also where the series risks becoming explanatory. When answers and connections are the point, mystery can give way to lore-building; the drama has to make those discoveries emotionally compelling, not just recognizable to readers and film fans.

How do the characters and performances hold the story together?
The series brings together child and adult characters in a story spanning a community, rather than limiting its attention to a single group of young protagonists. That broader structure suits a story about Derry’s history, but it puts pressure on the balance between character threads. The most effective strands are those that make the town’s past immediate and human; when attention is spread too widely, the horror can lose its through-line.
HBO announced a cast including Jovan Adepo, Taylour Paige, Chris Chalk, James Remar, Stephen Rider, Madeleine Stowe, Rudy Mancuso, and Bill Skarsgård. The ensemble gives the period drama a substantial adult presence alongside its younger characters. But cast size alone does not resolve the series’ balance problem: the strength of the experience depends on whether its people feel like a community caught in Derry’s history or simply multiple routes back to familiar franchise elements.

Is Pennywise in Welcome to Derry?
Yes. Pennywise is part of the series, and Bill Skarsgård is among the cast announced by HBO. The show also looks beyond the clown: the town’s earlier violence and the origins of its evil are central to the premise. That wider focus is what distinguishes it from a straightforward return to the films’ familiar confrontations.
Is it connected to the It movies?
Yes. Stephen King’s official page describes the series as based on IT and as an expansion of the vision of the two Muschietti films. It is connected to both the novel and the films, but its focus on an earlier period of Derry’s history gives it room to explore events beyond the movies’ central stories.

Do you need to read the book first?
No. The series is a standalone entry point for viewers who know only the films or are new to Derry. Reading King’s IT first may make the historical mysteries and references more rewarding, since the novel is the source the creators have said prompted their questions. But it is not a prerequisite to follow the series.

The show’s horror is most effective when imagery and setting make Derry itself feel threatening, rather than relying only on Pennywise’s presence. That emphasis supports the historical premise: dread can accumulate through the town’s atmosphere and its violent past, not just through a monster’s next appearance. The visual craft matters most when it reinforces this sense of a place with a history, rather than turning the series into an extended parade of franchise callbacks.
Is a second season’s timeline confirmed?
No. Muschietti told TechRadar that the creators conceived a reverse chronology, with the first season set in 1962 and intended later periods in 1935 and 1908. Those dates describe a creative plan, not confirmation that further seasons have been produced or scheduled. The first season’s earlier setting makes the historical structure clear, but viewers should not treat the stated plan as a renewal announcement.
Where can you watch it?
King’s official series page lists HBO streaming availability. A digital purchase listing has also appeared on Prime Video, but access and storefront listings can vary by territory and date; check the current local service listing before choosing where to watch.
