The title “Mageborn Series.. need help.” does not reveal what the original Reddit poster needed, so this guide addresses the most useful likely question: where to begin and what follows.
What is the reading order for the original Mageborn series?
Michael G. Manning’s official books page lists these five novels as Books 1 through 5:
- The Blacksmith’s Son
- The Line of Illeniel
- The Archmage Unbound
- The God-Stone War
- The Final Redemption
Follow that order for the main Mageborn story. Manning describes the series as the one that started his work in this world: it follows Mordecai, a blacksmith’s son who discovers his magical birthright and becomes entangled in a plot against the Duke of Lancaster and the Kingdom of Lothion.
What comes after the five Mageborn books?
The author describes Champions of the Dawning Dragons as the series that follows Mageborn, featuring Mordecai’s children. That establishes it as a follow-on, but the official page does not give a complete sequence covering every connected series and book.

Where do Embers of Illeniel and The Riven Gates fit?
Embers of Illeniel is described on Manning’s official books page as a prequel series exploring the origins of the dark gods. A prequel takes place earlier in the story world, but that fact alone does not establish that it should be read before the original series; Manning’s reported preference is publication order, so a reader who wants to follow the books as they were released can use that approach rather than assuming chronological order.
The same page calls The Riven Gates the final series of the Mageborn Universe. It does not provide a definitive order for placing every installment of Embers of Illeniel, Champions of the Dawning Dragons, and The Riven Gates relative to one another. For a clear starting point, read the five original Mageborn books first.

Where can you find print, digital, or audio editions?
Manning’s books page provides routes to print editions through Ingram and digital and audio retailer listings through Books2Read. His home page notes that retailer links cover multiple countries and separately points to direct print links. These are author-provided routes, not confirmation of a particular retailer’s current stock, price, or edition availability.
The author’s page also lists hardback omnibus editions: Volume 1 collects Books 1–3, and Volume 2 collects Books 4–5. Check the edition and retailer destination before ordering, since availability may vary.
