By Guinness World Records’ approximate worldwide estimates, Madonna’s top three best-selling albums are The Immaculate Collection (about 30 million copies), True Blue (about 25 million) and Like a Virgin (about 22 million). These are sales estimates, not revenue rankings or audited totals. The first entry is a greatest-hits compilation, so “albums” here includes compilations as well as studio albums.
Madonna’s top-selling albums, ranked
The figures below follow Guinness World Records’ approximate worldwide estimates, accessed on October 8, 2026. Guinness cautions that precise record sales are difficult to establish and often disputed, so the ranking should be read as a source-attributed estimate rather than a definitive count.

The Immaculate Collection — about 30 million copies
Released in 1990, this greatest-hits compilation spans Madonna’s work from 1983 to 1990. Her official album page describes a collection of 15 hit singles alongside two new tracks, “Justify My Love” and “Rescue Me.” Guinness World Records estimates worldwide sales at about 30 million. Madonna’s official album page gives a different combined figure: over 10 million in the United States and another 12 million outside America, or over 22 million in total. The two figures do not match, and the official page does not date its sales statement.

True Blue — about 25 million copies
Guinness World Records places the 1986 studio album second, with an approximate worldwide estimate of 25 million copies. Other estimates are lower: ChartMasters lists 22.55 million in original album sales, while Best Selling Albums lists 14,218,761. Those sources use their own estimation approaches; their figures should not be blended with Guinness’s as if they came from one shared accounting method. ChartMasters’ Madonna sales analysis notes that some country estimates are inferred from sales patterns, and Best Selling Albums’ ranking was updated on August 25, 2023.

Like a Virgin — about 22 million copies
Guinness World Records ranks the 1984 studio album third, at an approximate 22 million copies worldwide. The alternative estimates differ: ChartMasters lists 21.25 million in original album sales, and Best Selling Albums lists 15,040,179. The order also changes in Best Selling Albums’ ranking, which puts Like a Virgin ahead of True Blue. Guinness World Records’ female recording artist record is the source for the top-three order and approximate figures.
Why rankings and totals differ
Worldwide album totals are not presented consistently across these sources. Guinness estimates The Immaculate Collection at about 30 million; Madonna’s official page reports over 22 million combined across the United States and other countries. For True Blue and Like a Virgin, ChartMasters’ estimates are closer to Guinness’s than Best Selling Albums’ figures, but still do not match. The available sources do not establish one audited, directly comparable global dataset for all three albums.
Rank #2
Definitions and timing matter too. Guinness gives approximate worldwide sales figures; ChartMasters labels its numbers original album sales and says some country estimates are inferred; Best Selling Albums publishes a separate ranking. The figures may reflect different estimation methods or dates. Guinness also says online publication can lag and records may change.
U.S. certifications are a separate measure
RIAA certifications describe units certified in the United States, not worldwide sales. Guinness reports that The Immaculate Collection had 11 million U.S. units and an 11× multi-platinum certification dated May 5, 2023. It reports a 10-million-unit U.S. certification level for Like a Virgin. These certification figures have a different geographic scope and measure from the worldwide estimates above; they should not be substituted for them. See Guinness World Records’ U.S. multi-platinum albums record.

What “highest-grossing” means here
The available figures concern copies sold or estimated units, not money earned. They do not rank albums by revenue, which would require comparable information about prices, formats, territories and income. For a sales-based ranking, Guinness’s approximate order is The Immaculate Collection, True Blue, then Like a Virgin; a studio-albums-only list would exclude the compilation and require a consistently sourced ranking on that narrower basis.
Guinness places Madonna among the best-selling recording artists worldwide, while acknowledging the uncertainty around exact totals: “Although precise sales figures are difficult to obtain and are often disputed, it is widely acknowledged that only The Beatles, Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson have conclusively sold more records worldwide than Madonna, with most estimates settling on a figure between 300 and 400 million.”
