On August 11, 2025, Madonna asked Pope Leo XIV to go to Gaza and “bring your light to the children before it’s too late.” She said her son Rocco’s birthday prompted the appeal, described it as a mother’s plea, and wrote that she was not taking sides.
What Madonna asked Pope Leo to do
In her post, Madonna addressed the pope as “Most Holy Father” and asked him to visit Gaza. She said she could not bear to watch children suffer, wrote that “the children of the world belong to everyone,” and urged that humanitarian gates be fully opened. Her appeal ended: “There is no more time. Please say you will go.” RTÉ reproduced her appeal.

Madonna also argued that the pope was “the only one of us who cannot be denied entry.” That was her claim in the post, not an independently established guarantee that he could enter Gaza.
Why she made the appeal that day
Madonna said the date of the post was significant because it was her son Rocco’s birthday. The Associated Press reported that he turned 25 on August 11, 2025. She framed her appeal around children caught in the crossfire, while also acknowledging the suffering of others, including the mothers of hostages, and saying she prayed for the hostages’ release. The Associated Press reported the post and its context.

She characterized the message as nonpartisan: “I am not pointing fingers, placing blame or taking sides.”
How the appeal relates to Pope Leo’s statements
Pope Leo had separately called for an immediate ceasefire, humanitarian aid and protection of civilians. The Associated Press quoted him saying: “I once again call for an immediate end to the barbarity of this war and for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.” That reported position is distinct from Madonna’s request that he travel to Gaza; it does not establish that he accepted the invitation.

Organizations Madonna named
Madonna’s caption listed World Central Kitchen, Women Wage Peace and Women of the Sun as organizations people could donate to. JTA describes them, respectively, as a disaster-relief organization, an Israeli organization and a Palestinian group advocating peaceful resolution. Their inclusion identifies Madonna’s named donation destinations; it does not by itself establish a formal partnership or endorsement. JTA covered the organizations cited in her caption.
