Madonna confirmed in 2015 that she and Tupac Shakur dated. She said she was dating him during her March 1994 appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman. ABC News later described the relationship as dating from 1993 to 1994, but the available accounts do not establish exact start or end dates.
Did Madonna and Tupac date?
Yes. Madonna confirmed the relationship during a 2015 interview with Howard Stern, offering the clearest first-person evidence in the published accounts. Recalling her March 1994 Late Show with David Letterman appearance, she said: “I was dating Tupac Shakur at the time, and the thing is he got me all riled up on life in general.” The Howard Stern Show’s March 11, 2015 recap and Vogue’s later account report her confirmation.

What Tupac’s reported letter says—and what it does not prove
Accounts of the letter describe Tupac reflecting on how being seen with Madonna might affect each person’s public image. ABC News quoted this excerpt from the partially redacted letter, reported as dated January 15, 1995: “For you to be seen with a black man wouldn’t in any way jeopardize your career, if anything it would make you seem that much more open and exciting. But for me, at least in my previous perception, I felt due to my ‘image’ I would be letting down half of the people who made me what I thought I was.” ABC News
The passage is evidence of concerns described in a reported letter, not a complete account of the couple’s relationship or a confirmed explanation of a breakup. Because the letter was partially redacted in the reporting, its full contents and context cannot be inferred from the excerpt.

Why did Tupac and Madonna break up?
The available accounts do not establish a definitive reason or date for a breakup. The reported letter suggests Tupac was thinking about the relationship and the effect of public association on his image, but it does not, on its own, confirm that this was the reason they separated. Madonna’s statement confirms that they were dating in March 1994; ABC News’s 1993–1994 range remains a broad reported approximation rather than a complete chronology.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to read the timeline
- First-person recollection: Madonna’s 2015 interview directly supports that she was dating Tupac during the March 1994 Letterman appearance.
- Contemporaneous public association: the March 1, 1994 photograph establishes that they were pictured together at an event, but does not settle when their relationship began.
- Later reporting on a letter: Vogue and ABC News reported a dated, partially redacted letter and excerpts. Those reports offer context, not a precise breakup date or a complete record.
The clearest chronology is therefore limited but meaningful: Madonna said the relationship was underway in March 1994, and later reporting described a letter dated January 1995. Exact relationship boundaries and a definitive breakup explanation are not established by these accounts.
