Olympic ice dancers Madison Chock and Evan Bates announced their engagement in June 2022. Bates proposed during a beach walk in Thailand on June 11—a date that marked 11 years skating together and six years as a couple. They married in June 2024, according to their current U.S. Figure Skating roster.
How Bates proposed in Thailand
After attending an ISU Congress, Chock and Bates were in Thailand when Bates proposed during a beach walk on June 11, 2022. U.S. Figure Skating’s account of the engagement says the date was chosen for its meaning: they had skated together for 11 years and had been a couple for six.
The couple had already talked about getting engaged. “So that we were going to get engaged was no secret, but I wanted to make the proposal a surprise,” Bates said in the federation’s account. The surprise was the proposal itself, not the possibility of marriage.
The vintage Art Deco ring
During a New York City stop on the Stars on Ice tour, Chock and Bates went ring shopping together at a vintage dealer. Chock was drawn to a distinctive 1920s Art Deco ring. Bates later arranged to buy it and intercepted its delivery before proposing, according to U.S. Figure Skating’s proposal feature and December 2022 magazine feature. The published accounts do not identify a verified maker or price.

The engagement announcement is a 2022 story, not a description of the couple’s present marital status. U.S. Figure Skating’s 2025–26 roster says Chock and Bates married in June 2024. The roster identifies them as an ice-dance team and records that they have skated together since 2011.
