Julia Wendell’s family rejected her claim that she was Madeleine McCann, saying it was “obvious that Julia isn’t Maddie” and that they were “devastated at the current situation.” Later, police DNA evidence described in court in 2025 excluded Wendell as Madeleine. That evidence addressed Wendell’s identity; a separate harassment trial did not resolve what happened to Madeleine after she disappeared in 2007.
What did Julia Wendell’s family say?
In February 2023, after Wendell publicly claimed she might be Madeleine McCann, her family issued a statement on Facebook rejecting the claim and expressing distress over the attention. Global News quoted the family saying, “It is obvious that Julia isn’t Maddie,” and “we are devastated at the current situation.” The family also said Wendell had received care from psychologists and psychiatrists in the past. Global News reported the statement and the family’s response.
Wendell cited perceived physical similarities and gaps in her childhood memories. Those were her claims, not verified evidence that she was Madeleine. Global News also reported that Polish police had ruled out a connection, though the report did not explain the basis for that conclusion.
What evidence addressed whether Wendell was Madeleine?
Two distinct DNA accounts appeared at different times. The first was a private test arranged in 2023; the second was a police comparison described by witnesses in court in 2025. They should not be treated as the same test or as interchangeable evidence.

On the evidence described in court, the answer to whether Wendell was Madeleine is no. Cranwell also told jurors that 12 people had claimed to be Madeleine, according to ITV’s October 2025 report.
What happened to Madeleine McCann?
Madeleine was three when she disappeared from Praia da Luz, Portugal, on 3 May 2007. The question of Wendell’s identity is separate from the investigation into that disappearance. In June 2025, the Associated Press reported that searches took place in Portugal at the request of German prosecutors, showing that the disappearance investigation continued. What did the McCanns say about DNA testing and the court case?
Early reporting in 2023 included a contemporary claim that the McCanns had agreed to DNA testing, but it did not confirm that they had done so. The later police comparison described at trial is a separate development and should not be read as confirmation of that earlier claim.
The case that concluded in November 2025 concerned harassment, not the original disappearance. ITV reported that the jury found Julia Wandelt guilty of harassment but not stalking; her co-defendant Karen Spragg was acquitted of both allegations. The reporting described repeated contact and attendance at the McCanns’ home while Wandelt sought a DNA test.

After the verdict, Kate and Gerry McCann said: “Despite the jury’s guilty verdict of harassment, we take no pleasure in the result. Like most people, we did not want to go through a court process and only wanted the harassment to stop.” They also said they hoped Wandelt would receive appropriate care and support. ITV reported the verdict and the McCanns’ statement.
