Macklemore said his “Fuck America” remark at a Seattle benefit festival was a “slip up” made amid grief and anger. In a statement reported on September 26, 2024, he said his anger was aimed at U.S. politicians and their decisions—not at the country where he was born.
What Macklemore said in Seattle
On September 21, 2024, Macklemore performed at Palestine Will Live Forever, a benefit festival in Seattle. The Independent reported that he prefaced the remark with, “Straight up; say it. I’m not gonna stop you,” before saying, “Yeah, f— America.” Pitchfork reported footage of the performance, while The Independent reported the preceding words.
The event benefited Pious Projects, HEAL Palestine, UNRWA, and the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund, according to Pitchfork. The report situated the performance after Macklemore released “Hind’s Hall” and “Hind’s Hall 2.” That context identifies the event’s subject matter; it does not establish that everyone attending shared one political view.
What happened after the performance
September 24: Neon City Festival removes Macklemore from its lineup
The inaugural Neon City Festival in Las Vegas announced on September 24 that Macklemore would no longer perform. Its public explanation, quoted by Pitchfork, was “due to unforeseen circumstances.” The statement did not give a more specific reason.

September 26: Macklemore explains his remark
In a social-media statement reported by Pitchfork, Macklemore called the remark a “slip up” and said he wished he had been in a better place with his grief and anger. He wrote: “But the truth is I’m not OK. I haven’t been.” He said the benefit event was rooted in peace, love, and solidarity, and that it should not have been overshadowed by two words.
How Macklemore explained his anger
The Independent quoted Macklemore saying his anger was not “in disdain for where I was born.” He directed it instead at politicians whom he accused of putting profit and lobbyist money ahead of people, and asked readers not to conflate anger with hate. Those statements describe his own explanation of what he meant; they do not independently establish his motive.

These are figures and descriptions from his statement, as reproduced by Pitchfork, rather than independently verified statistics in the cited reporting.
How Seattle sports organizations responded
Pitchfork reported that the Seattle Kraken and Seattle Sounders FC issued a joint statement distancing their organizations from the remarks. They said Macklemore’s “increasingly divisive comments” did not reflect the values of their respective ownership groups, leagues, or organizations, and added: “We believe that sports bring people together and unite us.”

The timeline is clear: the performance took place on September 21, and the festival announced its decision on September 24. But the festival’s published reason was only “due to unforeseen circumstances.” The cited reporting does not establish that the remark caused the removal, so the two events should not be described as a confirmed cause and consequence.
