Macaulay Culkin says his full legal name is Macaulay Macaulay Culkin Culkin. He says he changed his middle name in 2019, after a fan poll, to set up a joke about being asked for his name at an airport.
What is Macaulay Culkin’s full legal name?
“My full name is Macaulay Macaulay Culkin Culkin,” Culkin said in WIRED’s Autocomplete Interview, released December 15, 2025. In the same answer, he described his birth name as Macaulay Carson Culkin; the WIRED transcript renders his spoken first name as “McCauley.” WIRED’s interview and transcript preserve his exact statement.
What changed, and when?
The change was to his middle name: Culkin’s birth name was reported as Macaulay Carson Culkin, and the name he now gives repeats Macaulay. Vanity Fair reports that followers voted on a new middle name in 2018 and that Culkin made the change legal in 2019. Its account says the poll included options such as “Kieran,” a nod to his younger brother, and “The McRib Is Back.” The publication did not provide vote totals, and no court document is cited in the available reporting, so the legal timeline rests on Culkin’s account and press coverage.
Why did he choose Macaulay as his middle name?
Culkin said he kept the poll’s winning choice because it made an airport exchange possible: if someone asked whether he was Macaulay Culkin, he could reply that Macaulay Culkin was his middle name. “I did it all for that one joke,” he said, according to Vanity Fair’s report of his remarks.

Where did he confirm the story?
He revisited the name change at A Nostalgic Night with Macaulay Culkin in Long Beach on November 22, 2025, an event marking 35 years since Home Alone. Vanity Fair reported his explanation there, while FOX6 also reported on November 25 that Culkin said on his tour that Macaulay Culkin was no longer his legal name.
