The available reporting does not establish what M. Night Shyamalan has supposedly been trying to achieve for 20 years, or which daughter the headline refers to. The strongest possible match is singer-songwriter Saleka Shyamalan’s work on Trap, but that connection does not verify the claim. His daughter Ishana Night Shyamalan is another plausible subject, with a separate directing credit.
What the “20 years” headline can—and cannot—be confirmed to mean
No source cited here explains the duration, identifies a goal Shyamalan has pursued for that period, or documents a specific achievement by either daughter that fulfills it. The phrase should therefore be treated as an unverified headline claim, not a fact about Shyamalan’s career or intentions.
The reporting does support two distinct stories involving his daughters. Saleka’s role and music in Trap are the strongest possible match to a headline about an achievement, but the connection is an inference rather than confirmation of the original headline’s meaning. The New Republic describes Saleka as writing and performing music for the film, while WUNC/NPR reports on the collaboration between father and daughter.
Saleka Shyamalan’s documented work on Trap
Saleka is a singer-songwriter who plays Lady Raven in Trap and wrote and performed music for the film. In the movie’s premise, Josh Hartnett’s character takes his daughter to a concert featuring Lady Raven, as TIME’s August 2, 2024 review describes. That makes Saleka’s work both musical and on-screen; it does not, by itself, show that she accomplished a particular long-term goal her father had pursued.

Ishana Night Shyamalan’s separate directing credit
Ishana is another daughter who could be meant by a headline about a career milestone. She directed The Watchers, with M. Night Shyamalan as producer, according to the Associated Press. That is a different project and role from Saleka’s work on Trap; the AP report does not connect Ishana’s film to a 20-year goal.

The available evidence identifies neither a measurable milestone nor an award, box-office result, or other defined benchmark behind the claim. A 2002 Los Angeles Times profile discusses Shyamalan’s family and his eldest daughter’s age when The Sixth Sense was made, but it does not substantiate the headline’s wording. Without a source that names the intended daughter and explains the goal, presenting the 20-year claim as established would go beyond what the reporting supports.
