Why did Lynne McGranger leave Home and Away?
McGranger described the decision as bittersweet, calling Irene her dream role and reflecting on the colleagues she had come to regard as family. In the departure statement reported by ABC News on February 24, 2025, she said: “After almost 33 years in my dream role and working everyday with people who I love, respect and whom I now consider family, it’s bittersweet to be closing the chapter on what has been the best and longest gig of my life.”
She did not publicly identify a more specific personal reason for leaving. She did say she had helped develop Irene’s exit idea, describing it as “very pertinent and very current” and saying viewers would not be disappointed, according to ABC’s report of her comments to Channel Seven.
When did she leave the show?
McGranger joined the series in 1993, according to RTÉ. The announcement’s “33 years” was a rounded career span: McGranger’s own wording was “almost 33 years.” ABC reported that she would finish filming in March 2025, while the character’s farewell would reach viewers later.

What happened to Irene Roberts?
In the exit storyline, Irene was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, sold her house and chose to travel while she still could. She left Summer Bay on a world trip, as later described by Back to the Bay and Mediaweek. This was the character’s story; it should not be mistaken for a statement about McGranger’s health or her private reason for leaving.

What did the show say about her departure?
Home and Away’s announcement, quoted by ITV This Morning on February 26, 2025, said: “After nearly 33 incredible years, our beloved diner queen, Irene, is waving goodbye to Summer Bay.” Executive producer Julie McGauran praised McGranger as “wonderfully talented, witty, funny and kind,” calling it a joy and privilege to work with her, in the statement reported by ABC.

McGranger won the Gold Logie for Most Popular Personality on Australian Television in 2025, ABC reported on August 4. A September 2026 profile by Starts at 60 reported that she was appearing in Christmas in The Grandparents Club, with a tour scheduled across NSW, the ACT, Victoria and Queensland from November 1 to December 20, 2026.
