Lynn Yamada Davis, the creator known online as Lynja and for the Cooking with Lynja videos, died on January 1, 2024, at age 67. Her daughter, Hannah Mariko Shofet, told the Los Angeles Times that Davis died of esophageal cancer at Riverview Medical Center in New Jersey. Her son announced the death publicly on January 12.
What happened to Lynja?
Davis’s family said her final moments were peaceful and that relatives and friends were with her, according to CBS News. The announcement brought renewed attention to a creator whose short, highly edited cooking videos had reached a large international audience.
Who was Lynn Yamada Davis?
Before becoming an internet personality, Davis trained and worked as an engineer. She studied civil engineering at MIT, completed postgraduate degrees at Columbia University, and worked in telecommunications engineering at Bell Labs and later AT&T Labs, according to an obituary drawing on MIT Alumni information.
That technical background became an unexpected part of her public story: Davis moved from a conventional engineering career into family-made food entertainment, developing a distinctive on-camera persona built around humor, quick cuts and playful characters.

How Cooking with Lynja became a viral cooking show
Davis began making Cooking with Lynja videos with her youngest child, Tim. Their format mixed recipes with comic editing, family banter, exaggerated reactions and recurring character play rather than presenting cooking as a formal instructional program.
CBS reported that a 2021 bacon, egg and cheese sandwich video was a turning point. Its viral spread helped propel the account from family collaboration to a major social-video franchise and established the fast, irreverent style associated with Lynja.

Her audience and major recognition
The audience figures below are historical snapshots reported by CBS News in January 2024, not current platform counts.
| Measure | Reported figure | When and how it was reported |
|---|---|---|
| TikTok followers | 17.8 million | CBS News report, January 2024 |
| Followers across platforms | Close to 30 million | CBS News report, January 2024; combined total rather than a single-platform count |
| Streamy recognition | 2022 Streamy Award | Reported by CBS News in its 2024 coverage |
The scale of those figures helps explain why Davis was often described as a grandmother-like presence for online viewers, while her videos remained rooted in collaboration with her family.

Food records with Nick DiGiovanni
Davis also appeared in record-setting food projects with creator Nick DiGiovanni. Guinness World Records reported on January 15, 2024 that four records made by the pair still stood at that time. Two measurements highlighted in that report were:
| Food creation | Measurement | Collaborator and record context |
|---|---|---|
| Largest cake pop | 44.24 kilograms (97 pounds 8.52 ounces) | Made by Davis and Nick DiGiovanni; Guinness reported the record standing on January 15, 2024 |
| Largest chicken nugget | 20.96 kilograms (46 pounds 3.34 ounces) | Made by Davis and Nick DiGiovanni; Guinness reported the record standing on January 15, 2024 |
Record status can change, so these should be understood as Guinness’s dated account rather than a guarantee that the titles remain current.

Why Lynja’s videos connected with viewers
Davis’s appeal came from the combination of practical food ideas and an intentionally unpolished, comic presentation. Her videos made room for mistakes, surprise and family interaction, allowing viewers to follow a character as much as a recipe. Tim’s role gave the series an intergenerational dynamic that distinguished it from studio-produced cooking channels.
Her path from MIT-trained engineer to short-form video star also broadened the story beyond social-media celebrity. Davis demonstrated that a second career in online entertainment could grow out of ordinary family collaboration, without erasing the professional life that came before it.

Lynja’s legacy
Lynn Yamada Davis leaves a body of cooking videos that introduced millions of viewers to a recognizable comic host and her family. The 2021 sandwich breakthrough, the 2022 Streamy Award, the audience reported in January 2024 and the Guinness-recognized food creations form the clearest markers of her public career.
Her death closed that chapter at 67, but the videos remain a record of the energetic, family-centered style that made “Cooking with Lynja” one of the most recognizable cooking accounts of the short-form era.
