Luke Bryan and Caroline Bryan met as college students in Statesboro, Georgia, separated for several years, and later found their way back to each other. They married in Turks and Caicos on December 8, 2006, and by December 2025 had celebrated 19 years of marriage. Their story also includes raising two sons and welcoming three children from their extended family after devastating losses.
1998: A college meeting in Statesboro
Luke and Caroline met while attending Georgia Southern University. Us Weekly’s retrospective timeline places their first meeting in fall 1998 at Dingus Magee’s, a bar in Statesboro. Caroline was a freshman and Luke a senior.

Caroline later recalled the encounter on the Get Real with Caroline Hobby podcast. Us Weekly reported her description: “We met my first week of college at a bar called Dingus, and we were just hangin’ out.” Us Weekly
A separation, then a reunion
Their early relationship did not proceed straight to marriage. Us Weekly’s 2023 timeline says they split around 2000 after dating for more than a year, with Caroline reportedly feeling overwhelmed when Luke talked about marriage. The published accounts do not agree on how long they were apart: Us Weekly describes about four years, while iHeart’s 2025 coverage quotes Luke saying they “broke up for nearly six years.” The safest description is that they spent several years apart.

They encountered each other again in Statesboro around 2004, according to Us Weekly, when Caroline was visiting her brother and Luke was performing. Caroline said something felt different when she saw him again. In a later account, Luke described reconnecting while he was pursuing music in Nashville and she was starting her career. He later characterized their relationship simply: “I married my college sweetheart.” Us Weekly iHeart

Their two sons
Their first son, Thomas “Bo” Boyer Bryan, was born in March 2008. Their second son, Tatum “Tate” Christopher Bryan, was born in August 2010. Us Weekly also reports a miscarriage before Tate’s birth; the couple has not been presented here as having publicly detailed that experience further. Us Weekly

Taking in three children in their extended family
After Luke’s sister Kelly died in May 2007 and her husband, Ben Cheshire, died in November 2014, the couple took in the three children, Us Weekly reports. Caroline described the decision in the ABC special Living Every Day: Luke Bryan, in a quote reproduced by Us Weekly: “We never thought twice about it. You know, it was never something that he and I had to sit down and talk about, you know, should we take this on? We just did it.” Us Weekly

Anniversaries and the latest public milestone
- December 2022: On their sixteenth anniversary, Caroline wrote that they had “zero clue what we were stepping into,” including “the good, the bad, silly moments and stupid arguments,” and said it had been worth it. Luke also shared an anniversary tribute. ABC News reported both posts. ABC News
