Ludmilla said the disputed video shown during her April 21, 2024, Coachella performance was taken out of context and did not reflect her beliefs. The footage, screened during “Rainha da Favela,” included a sign reading “Só Jesus expulsa o Tranca Rua das pessoas” (“Only Jesus expels Tranca Rua from people”), prompting accusations of religious intolerance because Tranca-Rua is associated with Afro-Brazilian religious traditions.
What appeared on the screen at Coachella
During her April 21, 2024, performance of “Rainha da Favela,” a video screened behind Ludmilla showed the phrase “Só Jesus expulsa o Tranca Rua das pessoas.” The wording presents a Christian claim about expelling Tranca-Rua, a figure associated in reporting with Umbanda and other Afro-Brazilian religious traditions. Viewers criticized the image as intolerant. [c001]
The criticism focused on the sign’s religious message. The available accounts establish that the image prompted objections, but do not show that every viewer interpreted it the same way.
What Ludmilla said in response
On April 22, Ludmilla said the video had been taken out of context. She described “Rainha da Favela” as a portrayal of the favela where she grew up—“real, nua e crua,” or real, raw and unvarnished—including hardship, poverty, police violence and religious intolerance. In her account, the concert presented a depiction of conditions she wanted to show, not an endorsement of the sign’s words. [c002]

How the video’s maker explained the image
Audiovisual artist Ana Julia Theodoro, known as Najur, said her street footage was intended to show what she saw without a filter. Billboard Brasil reported her view that the disputed frame was being associated with religious intolerance after its denunciatory context had been removed. That is Najur’s explanation of the work’s intent; it does not establish how all viewers understood the image. [c003]

The creative team’s apology and Ludmilla’s later comment

In an interview published April 30, 2024, Ludmilla said, “I don’t have a religion, and I believe that prejudice is profoundly sad.” The Guardian described the online disagreement as involving both accusations of intolerance and arguments that the image offered an unvarnished glimpse of Brazilian life. What the accounts establish—and what they do not
The reporting documents the sign shown at Coachella, the criticism it drew, Ludmilla’s account of the video’s purpose, Najur’s explanation of her footage, and the creative team’s apology. Those are distinct parts of the dispute: the sign’s wording explains why viewers objected, while the artist and performer described a different intended context.
The available coverage does not establish a formal response to this performance from a named Umbanda or Candomblé organization, or a single interpretation shared by practitioners. It supports reporting the competing statements, not a definitive ruling on intent or the response of all affected communities.
