Lucky is Apple TV’s seven-part crime drama starring Anya Taylor-Joy as a con woman fleeing the fallout from a major robbery. Adapted from Marissa Stapley’s novel, the series brings Taylor-Joy back to a leading television role after The Queen’s Gambit.
What is Lucky about?
Lucky is a con woman raised around crime. The story begins after she and her husband, Cary, steal nearly $10 million from a criminal family. With both the family and the FBI pursuing them, Lucky has to reckon with the past that shaped her while trying to get away.
The amount is part of the fictional plot, not a real-world figure. Fresh Air television critic David Bianculli describes the opening as a story that “starts in mid-caper and almost dares you to keep up.”
Who stars in the series?
- Anya Taylor-Joy plays Lucky.
- Drew Starkey plays Cary, Lucky’s husband.
- Timothy Olyphant plays Lucky’s father.
- Annette Bening plays Cary’s mother.
- Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor plays the FBI agent pursuing Lucky.

Is Lucky based on a book?
Yes. The seven-part series adapts Marissa Stapley’s crime novel, also titled Lucky. Readers interested in the story’s source material can look for Stapley’s novel; the reporting identifies the book but does not establish which retail editions are currently available.
