Its character angle comes from who gets paired together—and from the return of Jennifer Sh’reyan, Mariner’s former girlfriend. The official setup supports reading the episode as more character-driven than its premise might suggest, though it does not establish how much time the episode devotes to character development versus comedy or action.
What happens in “The Best Exotic Nanite Hotel”?
Paramount+ lists the episode as season 5, episode 3, and describes the Lower Deckers hunting nanites at a resort in space. Paramount+’s episode listing supplies the basic premise; the more detailed setup comes from Dayton Ward’s November 1, 2024 feature for StarTrek.com.
Ward places the crew aboard the Cosmic Duchess, a massive, moon-sized interstellar cruise ship, where a cluster of nanites is eating metal and replicating. As he describes it, “This time, the crew is tasked with containing a bizarre infestation of ‘nanites,’ microscopic robots working together in a cluster, that’s infested the Duchess.”
How does the episode split its characters?
The setup divides the cast into two mission strands rather than sending everyone after the same problem.

Mariner’s group investigates the nanites
Mariner, Tendi, Rutherford, and T’Lyn pursue the infestation, joined by Jennifer Sh’reyan. StarTrek.com identifies Jennifer as Mariner’s former girlfriend, making her return a relationship thread built directly into the mission rather than an unrelated detail.
Boimler joins Ransom on a separate errand
Boimler accompanies Commander Ransom on a side quest to retrieve an admiral who has been away on vacation and is AWOL from Starfleet. That pairing sets up a distinct character dynamic alongside the nanite hunt, even though the available episode description does not establish how the two strands compare in length or emphasis.

Why does the premise suggest a character-driven episode?
The nanites and the unusual resort setting provide the external problem; the character pairings give the story its interpersonal shape. Jennifer’s presence brings Mariner’s past into the present mission, while Boimler’s assignment with Ransom creates a separate two-person thread. That combination makes “more character-driven than expected” a reasonable interpretation of the setup: a seemingly oddball infestation story also places relationship history and contrasting character partnerships at its center.
That is an interpretation, not a measured critical verdict. The official listing establishes the resort-and-nanite premise, and Ward’s feature identifies the participants and Jennifer’s relationship to Mariner. Neither source quantifies screen time or proves that character development outweighs the episode’s comedy or science-fiction action.

Where do the nanites fit in Star Trek?
StarTrek.com notes the franchise’s earlier use of nanites, including their appearance in The Next Generation episode “Evolution.” That connection adds continuity for longtime viewers, but the episode’s immediate focus is the infestation aboard the Cosmic Duchess and the crew split across its two assignments.
