Loveyapa is a Hindi-language romantic comedy that follows the blueprint of Tamil hit Love Today so closely that its updates rarely become a distinct identity. Its phone-swap premise still opens a timely window onto trust and private digital lives, but the remake’s lighter touch and uneven lead chemistry blunt the emotional impact that could have made the story feel newly its own.

What is Loveyapa about?

Directed by Advait Chandan, Loveyapa stars Junaid Khan as Gaurav “Gucci” Sachdeva and Khushi Kapoor as Baani Sharma. The couple wants to marry, but Baani’s father insists they exchange phones for a day. Messages, accounts and other private material surface, turning the exercise into a test of trust. The film opened theatrically on February 7, 2025; Rotten Tomatoes lists its runtime as 2 hours 17 minutes. Rotten Tomatoes’ film listing records those details.

How closely does Loveyapa follow Love Today?

Loveyapa is an official remake of Pradeep Ranganathan’s 2022 Tamil film Love Today. The Hollywood Reporter India describes it as near-faithful: there are tweaks to setting, dialogue and family dynamics, but the major story beats remain familiar. For viewers who know the original, the central question is less whether the Hindi version changes the premise than whether its changes alter what the story means. In my view, they do not go far enough. The adaptation relocates the material, but largely preserves the machinery rather than finding a fresh dramatic perspective. The Hollywood Reporter India’s review discusses the remake’s fidelity and tweaks; India Today’s review also frames it in relation to the source film.

Does the comedy lead to an emotional payoff?

The exchanged phones supply an efficient comic engine: a couple’s private histories become visible, and each discovery can unsettle the trust they thought they had. But the premise needs more than revelations. It needs the characters’ reactions to accumulate into emotional consequences. The Hollywood Reporter India argues that Love Today used humor to prepare for heavier moments, while Loveyapa keeps the treatment lighter. That tonal choice makes the Hindi version breezy, but also leaves its conflicts feeling less consequential than their subject matter suggests.

This is where fidelity becomes a weakness. Repeating familiar beats can keep the story moving for newcomers, yet viewers who have seen the Tamil film may find that the remake offers little new tension or emotional interpretation to compensate for its predictability.

How do the leads and contemporary themes work?

The film’s digital-life premise remains relevant: the phone exchange turns messages and online histories into a test of what partners owe each other and what they may keep private. Body-shaming and deepfakes also enter the film’s social conversation. These subjects give the comedy topical reach, but they can feel more like issues the story wants to address than experiences fully developed through character and consequence.

Critical responses differ on how well the performances and ideas come together. India Today takes a more favorable view of the central performances and sees thoughtful material beneath the colorful presentation. The Indian Express, which rated the film 2/5, faults the slow first half and says the leads lack spark; it also finds the social material wrapped in banal writing. That disagreement points to the film’s unevenness: its premise and themes may engage viewers, but the execution does not consistently give the couple’s relationship enough energy or depth. India Today and The Indian Express represent distinct assessments.

Is Loveyapa worth watching if you have seen Love Today?

If you have not seen the original, the phone-swap setup may still deliver a watchable romantic comedy with a recognizable contemporary hook. If you have seen Love Today, expect a Hindi adaptation that makes some local adjustments but mostly retraces the source’s path. Its lighter tone and limited reinvention make it difficult to recommend as an essential second take. The film’s value is less in discovering a new story than in seeing how familiar material fares in a different language and setting.
