Staff cited unmanageable crowds, understaffing and difficult working conditions. The episode highlights pressures on both workers and visitors, but the evidence does not show that tourism volume alone caused the labor dispute.
What happened at the Louvre on June 16, 2025?
On June 16, employees refused to take up their posts during a routine internal meeting, and visitors were left outside while the museum was closed. The Associated Press reported that gallery attendants, ticket agents and security personnel took part. This was a staff walkout, not a closure order established by the available reporting.
AP described the staff’s concerns as “unmanageable crowds” and working conditions as “untenable.” Those are phrases in the news report; the available account does not attribute them to a particular named employee.
Why did staff walk out?
The concerns reported by AP included crowding, chronic understaffing and difficult working conditions. “Overtourism” captures one pressure in the story, but reducing the dispute to visitor numbers alone would leave out the workers’ concerns about staffing and the conditions of their jobs.

A French National Assembly record provides one specific staffing comparison: surveillance and security staffing fell from 838 ETPT in 2014 to 788 in 2024, a decrease of 50 ETPT, or 6 percent. These figures apply to that category, not the Louvre’s entire workforce, and do not by themselves establish why employees walked out. French National Assembly record.
Is the Louvre currently closed?
The June 2025 walkout does not establish that the museum is currently closed. The Louvre’s visitor information lists regular opening hours, while cautioning that hours and gallery access can vary. Check the museum’s official hours and admission information for your planned date rather than relying on an old closure report.
The museum says admission covers its permanent collections and temporary exhibitions. It also warns visitors about illicit ticket sellers and mirror sites; use the official admission information when planning or buying a ticket. Opening details and room availability can change.

In 2026, France’s Ministry of Culture announced that Philippe Jost would lead a Louvre reorganization mission in January and February, with initial recommendations due at the end of February. The Ministry also announced Christophe Leribault’s appointment to head the establishment. These announcements provide later institutional context, but they do not establish that the concerns raised by staff in June 2025 were resolved.
Rank #3
The evidence available here does not establish a verified annual attendance figure with its original publisher and year, nor does it support ranking particular policy responses to visitor pressure. The clearest documented points are the walkout, the concerns reported by AP and the limited staffing comparison recorded by the National Assembly.
