What is Elle about?
Elle is a prequel series from Hello Sunshine and Amazon MGM Studios. Its official synopsis places the story in 1995, during Elle’s high-school years, and centers on her friendships, romance, fashion, and family relationships, including her bond with her mother, Eva. A first-look feature describes the setting as Seattle, where Elle’s sunny outlook meets a 1990s grunge scene. Amazon’s series guide and Elle’s first-look feature provide those details.
How Minetree approached the role
Minetree has said she watched Witherspoon’s performance while working to avoid imitating it. Instead, she aimed to bring forward aspects of herself that she felt connected her to Elle. For her audition, she made her own version of Elle’s Harvard admissions video. Executive producer Lauren Neustadter told Elle that the production received thousands of audition tapes and that Minetree stood out.

The casting bridges two stages of the character’s life: Witherspoon played young-adult Elle as she headed to Harvard in the 2001 film, while Minetree portrays her in high school. Witherspoon is also an executive producer on the prequel. The Associated Press covered Minetree’s comments on developing the role.
