“Naively, I thought that because at this point, I’m relatively well versed in grief for my age, that it might soften the blow. [That was] super-naive. It’s very different. I’ve never lost a friend before.”
The bracketed clarification is part of the quotation as reported by Rolling Stone UK. Tomlinson was describing his own experience, not offering a general rule about grief.

Why the 15th anniversary brought the loss into focus
The interview’s immediate context was One Direction’s 15th anniversary in July 2025. Tomlinson said it was the first anniversary celebrated without Payne and that the occasion felt uncomfortable, even as he believed the group’s impulse to celebrate mattered.
“It was really uncomfortable, actually, the 15th anniversary, because the [collective] feeling to celebrate is as important, if not more important than ever, on behalf of Liam,”

Rolling Stone UK published Nick Reilly’s coverage of the interview in October 2025. The magazine said its print issue 24 featuring Tomlinson was due to arrive October 9, with the full cover story to follow online during the subsequent week. The Independent’s October 9 report also placed his remarks in the context of the July anniversary.
Tomlinson’s earlier experience with grief
Tomlinson referred to the deaths of his mother, Johannah Deakin, in 2016 and his sister, Félicité Tomlinson, in 2019. As The Independent reported, he had thought those experiences made him relatively familiar with grief for his age. In the Rolling Stone UK interview, he said Payne’s death was different because he had never before lost a friend.

Tomlinson praised Payne’s musical ability and role in the group, describing his experience, pitch, stage presence and songwriting as important to One Direction. In a separate social media tribute after Payne’s death, he wrote, “For the record, Liam was in my opinion the most vital part of One Direction.” That tribute was distinct from the later interview.
Tomlinson also offered a personal view of how Payne was perceived publicly. “He was just a very misunderstood person, I think, from a public perspective,” he said, adding that he believed Payne wanted to be liked. Those are Tomlinson’s characterizations, rather than independently established facts about Payne.

The timeline behind the interview
One Direction formed in 2010 after Payne, Tomlinson, Harry Styles, Niall Horan and Zayn Malik auditioned for The X Factor as solo acts and were brought together by Simon Cowell, according to the Associated Press. Payne died in Buenos Aires on October 16, 2024, aged 31. The Associated Press reported that he died after falling from a hotel balcony; its account initially ran October 17 and was updated October 24, 2024.
Following Payne’s death, the surviving members issued a joint tribute. TIME also covered Tomlinson’s separate tribute, in which he called Payne a brother and said he wanted to be there for Payne’s son, Bear. The “impossibly difficult” remarks came later, in Tomlinson’s 2025 interview.
