Lost does not reveal that the Oceanic Flight 815 survivors were dead from the beginning. The island story happened; the season-six flash-sideways is a shared afterlife where the characters find one another after dying at different times. At the end, Jack dies on the island, six people escape by plane, and Hurley, Ben, and Desmond remain behind.
Were the passengers dead the whole time?
No. The island events are real within the story. ABC’s finale account confirms that the island, its conflicts, the Others, the DHARMA Initiative, and the characters’ experiences were real. The season-six flash-sideways is a separate afterlife frame, not proof that everyone died in the 2004 crash.

The church scene explains the timeline. Christian tells Jack that the people gathered there are dead, but they did not all die at the same time: some died before Jack, while others died long after him. They have come together after death, recognize the bonds they shared, and move on together.
Did the bomb kill everyone?
No. The sideways timeline is not the result of the season-five bomb killing the survivors. CBS’s contemporary finale explanation likewise describes the characters as dying at different times and places, rather than all perishing in the blast.

Who leaves the island, and who stays?
In the island timeline, the finale separates the survivors into those who escape and those who remain. ABC’s recap identifies the people aboard the Ajira plane and those left to protect the island:
| Outcome | Characters |
|---|---|
| Leave on the Ajira plane | Kate, Sawyer, Claire, Miles, Lapidus, and Richard |
| Stay behind | Hurley, Ben, and Desmond |
| Dies on the island | Jack |
Jack dies after the final confrontation and his act to restore the island’s light. The finale does not show how long the plane’s passengers live afterward, or what later lives they lead. The church reunion establishes that they eventually die and reunite with the others, but not when or how.

What happened to the characters who died earlier?
Sun, Jin, Sayid, Shannon, and Boone are among those who died before the ending’s final island events. Their presence in the church is not a resurrection or a return to the island timeline; it is part of the afterlife gathering where the characters reconnect.
Why did the closing credits look like a crash-site reveal?
The final broadcast showed images of Oceanic 815 wreckage on a beach during the closing credits, which led some viewers to read them as evidence that nobody survived. ABC clarified in a statement quoted by the Los Angeles Times that the images were not part of the story. They were a visual pause before the news, not a final scene or plot clue.

What did the creators want the ending to mean?
Executive producer Carlton Cuse described the goal as a spiritual ending that reflected the sense of community among the people who made the show. That comment helps explain the finale’s emotional focus on reunion and connection; it does not supply an additional plot answer or resolve every question about the island’s mythology.
