Long Bright River is worth watching chiefly for Amanda Seyfried’s quietly arresting work as a Philadelphia police officer whose investigation into a series of murders becomes entangled with her search for her missing sister. The eight-episode limited series has a compassionate interest in people often pushed to the margins of crime stories, though its familiar mystery and occasionally heavy-handed storytelling keep it from being as distinctive as its ambitions.

What is Long Bright River about?

Based on Liz Moore’s novel, the Peacock suspense thriller follows Mickey Fitzpatrick (Seyfried), a police officer patrolling a Philadelphia neighborhood affected by the opioid crisis. As murders begin, Mickey suspects her own family history may be connected to the case. At the same time, she is trying to find her younger sister, whose disappearance makes the investigation personal.

The story brings police work, family history and addiction into the same frame. Its two strands—a murder investigation and a sister’s search—give the series a character-driven engine rather than the reset-and-repeat rhythm of an ongoing procedural. Peacock released all eight one-hour episodes on March 13, 2025.

Does Amanda Seyfried make the series worth watching?

She is its strongest reason to watch. Seyfried makes Mickey feel observant and burdened without reducing her to either a heroic detective or a symbol. Her performance gives the show a steady center as it moves between the demands of police work and the unresolved damage in Mickey’s family.

TV Guide’s Maggie Fremont likewise praised Seyfried and the ensemble’s specificity, calling the series a “very, very solid show” with “some excellent performances.” Those are Fremont’s judgments, not a claim of universal consensus; she also found the storytelling heavy-handed at times and the central mystery forgettable.

The principal cast also includes Nicholas Pinnock, Ashleigh Cummings, Callum Vinson and John Doman. Together, the performances help the series sustain interest even when the mystery itself feels familiar.

How does the series handle its crime story and representation?

The show’s most purposeful choice is to treat the women who become victims as people deserving attention, not simply clues in a police case. Fremont singled out the compassion the series shows toward them. That concern fits the creators’ stated aim: co-creator and showrunner Nikki Toscano said the series seeks to challenge stereotypes about poverty, addiction, sex work, marginalization and police work, and to question the “police as savior” narrative.

That aim is meaningful, but intention is not the same as achievement. The relevant test is what the series gives its characters on screen: whether they have specificity and agency beyond their role in Mickey’s investigation. The victim-centered empathy Fremont noticed is one sign of that effort; the occasional bluntness of the storytelling can make the message feel more stated than discovered.

Moore’s connection to the setting offers context, not a guarantee of comprehensiveness. Peacock says her family history and work with Philadelphia harm-reduction and community-service organizations informed the series. The Los Angeles Times reports that Moore researched Kensington and volunteered there, including leading writing workshops at a women’s day shelter. Moore described the neighborhood as “a tight-knit, vibrant neighborhood in Philadelphia that has become very dear to me, and that is often misunderstood and misrepresented in the national media.” The drama is informed by that engagement, but it is fiction, not a documentary or a complete portrait of Kensington.

Is the series based on a book, and how does the adaptation differ?

Yes. Liz Moore’s novel Long Bright River is the source. The series turns the literary story into an eight-episode screen adaptation led by Seyfried, with Moore involved as co-creator and writer alongside Toscano. Toscano described the adaptation challenge as translating “this moving love story between two sisters” and the way the family’s past connects to the present-day murder mystery.

The screen version should be approached as an adaptation, not a promise of scene-by-scene fidelity. Moore herself recognized the value of a distinct interpretation: after Seyfried spoke about the difficulty of matching a writer’s imagined character, Moore said she was moved by what Seyfried brought to the role and that it was “very different than what I wrote but that’s a good thing.” Readers who want the story’s original literary form can find Moore’s novel through Simon & Schuster.

Where can you watch Long Bright River?

The series is listed for streaming on Peacock, and Sony also lists Peacock as its streaming destination. Streaming rights can vary by country and change over time. Channel 4 announced a UK acquisition in 2025, but its announcement left UK transmission details pending, so that release alone does not establish current UK availability.

Verdict: is Long Bright River worth watching?

For viewers who value character-led crime drama, a strong central performance and a more humane focus on victims, Long Bright River is a solid choice. Its ambitions to complicate familiar stereotypes give the investigation added weight, even if the mystery is not especially surprising and the show sometimes presses its themes too firmly. Seyfried is the anchor: she makes Mickey’s private search and public work compelling enough to carry the series through its less original turns.
