Lossless compression can reduce video data while preserving an exact reconstruction of the encoded source. Lossy compression makes files and streams more efficient by permanently discarding some information. Choose lossless when exact preservation or analysis matters; choose lossy when practical delivery size and bandwidth matter more than exact reconstruction.
What the difference means
Compression represents video using less data. Lossless compression does this by encoding redundancy more efficiently, so decoding reproduces the encoded source exactly. It does not mean the video is uncompressed.
Lossy compression removes some information that cannot be restored by decoding. The result can be much smaller or require a lower delivery bitrate, but it is not an exact reconstruction. The amount and visibility of the loss depend on the codec, settings, source, and viewing conditions.
Lossy and lossless compared
| Question | Lossless | Lossy |
|---|---|---|
| Is decoding exact? | Yes. The decoded result reproduces the encoded source exactly. | No. Some information has been discarded. |
| Main tradeoff | Preserves the data, but storage needs and encoding demands can still be substantial. | Can reduce file size or bitrate, but the lost information is irreversible. |
| Common fit | Preservation, scientific imaging, screen recording, or an editing intermediate where avoiding generational loss matters. | Streaming and distribution where bitrate and file size are important. |
| Does “visually lossless” mean exact? | Not applicable: lossless means exact reconstruction. | No. It describes loss that may not be detectable by eye, not exact data reconstruction. |
When to choose each type
Choose lossless for preservation and working masters
Lossless is useful when later users need the encoded source’s exact data: for archival preservation, scientific imaging, screen recording, or an intermediate file that will be edited further. Each lossy re-encode can introduce additional irreversible changes, so keeping a lossless source can protect the material used for later versions.

Lossless does not guarantee a small file or quick encode. FFV1, for example, is a documented lossless intra-frame format that provides storage compression compared with uncompressed video. The IETF describes it as useful for preservation and intermediate video, including frame fixity and self-description. RFC 9043
Choose lossy for delivery when efficiency matters
Lossy encoding is often the practical choice for sharing or streaming because discarding some information can lower the amount of data that must be stored or transmitted. It is a tradeoff: the decoded file may look very good, but cannot recover what the encoder removed.

“Visually lossless” is still lossy. RFC 8761 uses the term for compression where the lost data are not detectable to the eye after compression and decompression. It does not promise identical pixel values or bit-for-bit reconstruction. RFC 8761
Codec, compression method, and settings are separate questions
A codec name alone does not always tell you whether a particular file is lossless. The encoder configuration matters: x265 documents a lossless mode, while FFV1 is specified as a lossless format. With x265, all presets can generate lossless streams; its documentation says slower presets generally improve compression ratios at the cost of longer encoding time. That is an encoder-specific tradeoff, not a universal performance rule. x265 lossless mode documentation

Intraframe and interframe describe how frames are coded, not whether compression is lossless. Intraframe methods code each frame separately; interframe methods exploit redundancy between adjacent frames. Either term alone does not establish whether information is discarded. FADGI’s 2014 archiving guidance prefers intraframe compression in its stated archival context; that context-specific recommendation should not be treated as a universal rule for every codec or workflow. Resolution alone does not determine bitrate. Frame rate, color depth, codec, encoding parameters, scene complexity, and motion also affect how much data a video needs. A detailed, fast-moving scene can require more data than a simple scene at the same resolution and frame rate.

RFC 9317 gives illustrative typical ranges of 6–8 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p, 4.5–7 Mbps for H.265 at 1080p, and 10–20 Mbps for H.265 at 2160p. These are published examples from the RFC, not universal targets or a controlled, direct comparison of the codecs. Actual requirements depend on the content and encoding choices. RFC 9317
AV1 is described by the Alliance for Open Media as an open codec designed for high-quality compression with greater efficiency than previous codecs. Actual compression results and whether a file can be played depend on the encoder, decoder, settings, and device support. Alliance for Open Media: AV1 overview

A practical choice for documentary footage
- Keep a lossless source when the footage is an archival master, scientific record, screen capture, or source for future editing where exact reconstruction matters.
- Make a lossy delivery copy when the goal is to distribute or stream efficiently and a controlled reduction in fidelity is acceptable.
- Check the actual encode mode rather than assuming a codec label guarantees lossless output.
- Test representative scenes before committing to delivery settings: include movement, fine texture, gradients, and any detail that matters to the documentary.
- Retain the source separately if you may need to create a higher-quality or differently encoded version later. Compression does not replace a backup strategy.
For a documentary that runs as a YouTube livestream
If your finished documentary is being streamed as a pre-recorded video rather than captured live from a camera, the compression decision still concerns the uploaded file: lossless may preserve more of the source, while lossy can make the file more practical to store and deliver. StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live 24/7 from uploaded videos; it loops the uploaded video or playlist, not a camera feed. StreamNeo
Or let it run in the cloud
Upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. StreamNeo plays the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it does not re-encode the video. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
