To use a physical green screen in OBS, add your webcam as a Video Capture Source, then apply the source’s Chroma Key filter. Adjust the key and edge controls while watching the preview. You will need a green backdrop; lighting and camera framing affect what the filter has to work with.
What you need
- A green screen backdrop positioned behind you and large enough to cover the background area in your camera frame.
- A webcam and streaming software. The steps below use OBS Studio.
- A way to mount or support the screen if your room does not already have a suitable mounting point. A stand is optional and depends on the backdrop and your space.
- Lighting that lets the webcam produce an image you can inspect clearly. Logitech’s C922 support guide notes that lighting matters to webcam image quality, particularly for a 720p/60fps stream: Logitech webcam image quality guidance.
There is no universal screen size, camera-to-screen distance, or light placement established for every room and camera. Frame the intended background area, then judge the result in your own preview rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all measurement.
Set up a physical green screen in OBS
- Position and frame the backdrop. Place the screen behind you and adjust the camera so the area you want to remove is covered. Check the edges of the camera frame for uncovered walls, furniture, or other background.
- Check the webcam image and lighting. Look for an image that is clear enough to distinguish you from the screen. Change the room lighting or camera position if the preview makes the background or subject difficult to see; the available guidance does not prescribe a universal lighting layout.
- Add your webcam to the scene. In OBS, add a Video Capture Source and select your webcam. OBS documents that this source can be positioned and resized and can use filters: OBS Video Capture Sources.
- Open the webcam source’s filters. Add the Chroma Key filter. OBS describes it as removing occurrences of a selected color and identifies it as a filter for green screens: OBS Chroma Key Filter.
- Refine the key using the preview. Start with the default green key color, then adjust the controls one at a time while watching the subject’s outline and the remaining background. OBS documents similarity, smoothness, key color spill reduction, opacity, contrast, and brightness as controls. Higher similarity removes a broader range of colors and may also erase pixels you meant to keep. Smoothness changes the softness of removed edges; spill reduction targets residual key color around the subject’s edges.
- Review the whole scene before going live. Check your hair, shoulders, and other detailed edges, along with the corners of the frame and any shadows or background that remain. There is no universally correct set of filter values: use the preview to find a workable result for your screen, camera, and lighting.
Use NVIDIA Broadcast instead of a physical screen
NVIDIA Broadcast offers background removal, replacement, and blur as software effects. Its product page lists Windows 10 64-bit, a GeForce RTX 2060, Quadro RTX 3000, TITAN RTX, or higher GPU, and at least 8 GB RAM. It recommends an Intel Core i5 8600 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600 or higher and lists NVIDIA driver requirements. These are the requirements displayed on NVIDIA’s page; check its current compatibility information before installing or buying hardware because software and requirements can change: NVIDIA Broadcast.
This is a virtual-camera workflow, not OBS chroma keying of a physical backdrop. NVIDIA’s setup guide instructs users to select the NVIDIA Broadcast camera as a Video Capture Source in OBS: NVIDIA Broadcast setup guide. Choose between the approaches based on whether you have space for a screen, can control the background in the camera view, have compatible hardware, and prefer a physical key or a software effect. Neither approach is established as universally better.

Choose equipment for your room
- Backdrop: A green screen backdrop or collapsible chroma key screen is the main physical item. Consider the available space, whether it can be mounted or folded away, and whether your camera can frame it. The cited sources do not compare materials, dimensions, or specific products.
- Lighting: Consider improving webcam lighting if the image is poorly lit. The Logitech guidance supports lighting’s importance to image quality but does not recommend a particular light or green-screen lighting arrangement.
- Stand or mounting hardware: Add support only if the backdrop and room need it; it is not essential for every setup.
- Software: OBS provides a Chroma Key filter for a physical green screen. NVIDIA Broadcast is a separate option for compatible systems.
Troubleshoot common green-screen problems
