The show ran from 1972 to 1983 and used the Korean War as the setting for stories about friendship, trauma, institutional absurdity and the human cost of conflict. Although the series was based on Robert Altman’s 1970 film—and, ultimately, on physician H. Richard Hornberger’s novel—its long television run gave its ensemble room to develop characters in unusually deep ways.
Swit appeared throughout the series as Major Margaret Houlihan, the 4077th’s head nurse. She was part of the central ensemble alongside Alan Alda’s Captain Benjamin Franklin “Hawkeye” Pierce and became one of the program’s longest-serving principal cast members.

“Hot Lips” was initially a nickname that reduced Houlihan to her sexuality and romantic entanglements. Swit, together with the show’s writers and producers, helped transform Margaret into something more substantial: an exceptionally capable military nurse, a woman navigating a male-dominated institution, and a character capable of authority, comedy, anger, vulnerability, romance and moral conviction.
That evolution is central to Swit’s legacy. Houlihan did not simply remain the object of a running joke. Over time, the character became a professional whose expertise mattered, a leader who could challenge the doctors around her, and a fully realized person shaped by the pressures of war.
An Emmy-recognized performance on television history’s most durable dramas
The Television Academy records ten Emmy nominations for Swit, including two wins for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy or Variety/Music Series, in 1980 and 1982. Her nominations covered much of M*A*S*H’s run and reflected the range she brought to a role that could shift from broad comedy to emotionally serious drama without losing its credibility.
The series itself received 109 Emmy nominations and won 14. Its finale remains one of television’s most consequential broadcast events, though reported audience totals vary depending on the measurement convention and historical source used.

A career that continued beyond M*A*S*H
Swit’s best-known role did not mark the end of her career. She continued working in theater, television and film, and made guest appearances on programs including The Muppet Show, The Love Boat, Bonanza, Pyramid and Match Game.
Her film credits included Freebie and the Bean, S.O.B. and Play the Flute. She also appeared in the original television movie that introduced Christine Cagney in Cagney & Lacey. When the project developed into an ongoing series, Swit was unavailable because she was still working on M*A*S*H. Meg Foster played Cagney in the initial series run, and Sharon Gless later took over the role.
Stage work was another important part of Swit’s career. Her credits included The Apple Tree, Doubt, Equus, Barefoot in the Park, Driving Miss Daisy, Mame and The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. Theater allowed her to work outside the expectations attached to Margaret Houlihan and demonstrated the breadth of her training and interests.

Swit’s public identity eventually extended well beyond acting. She was an animal activist, artist and dedicated vegan whose advocacy focused on rescue, adoption, spaying and neutering, opposition to puppy mills, and preventing cruelty to animals.

She founded SwitHeart Animal Alliance, an organization associated with animal rescue, education and animal-protection work. Her humanitarian efforts and support for animal charities became a sustained part of her life rather than a brief extension of her celebrity.
Her book, SwitHeart: The Watercolour Artistry & Animal Activism of Loretta Swit, brought those interests together. It features her animal artwork, anecdotes and stories, with a second edition that includes an introduction by her M*A*S*H co-star Mike Farrell. The official organization has described the book as supporting its charitable work and has stated that it is not currently available through Amazon; readers interested in the project should look for the official SwitHeart Animal Alliance shop or donation information and verify current fulfillment details.
Why Loretta Swit’s legacy endures
Swit’s death will naturally renew attention on Major Margaret Houlihan, the role that made her famous. But remembering her only through the “Hot Lips” nickname would repeat the limitation she spent much of her career overcoming.
She helped turn a potentially one-note comic stereotype into a woman with professional authority, emotional complexity and an independent place in the story. She remained part of M*A*S*H for all eleven seasons, earned two Emmys from ten nominations, and then continued to work in stage, screen and television roles.
Rank #4
Later, she used her visibility to advocate for animals and to share her own watercolor art. The result is a legacy with several connected parts: an influential television performance, a substantial theater career, a commitment to humane treatment of animals, and a creative life that continued after her signature show ended.
Loretta Swit was an Emmy-winning actor whose most famous character grew beyond a nickname. Her work gave Margaret Houlihan a lasting humanity—and her life after M*A*S*H showed that Swit’s own story was just as expansive.
