In Below Deck Mediterranean Season 4, chef Mila Kolomeitseva’s galley became a source of concern for chief stew Hannah Ferrier and Captain Sandy Yawn. Bravo’s retrospective points to boxed pancake mix, questionable nachos and a steak put in the microwave; later, Hannah objected to packaged taco products being served to charter guests. The incidents were part of the show’s 2019 season, and Bravo reported that guest complaints and Hannah’s refusal to serve some dishes led Sandy to fire Mila.
The early galley incidents: pancakes, nachos and steak
Bravo’s 2020 retrospective identifies three of Mila’s most discussed kitchen missteps: making pancakes from a boxed mix, sending out nachos it called questionable, and putting steak in a microwave. The retrospective places the steak moment in Below Deck Mediterranean Season 4, Episode 1. Those are Bravo’s descriptions of the televised scenes, rather than an independent assessment of Mila’s culinary ability.
The dishes stood out in the context of a charter yacht, where guests and crew expected the galley to provide a higher level of food and service than an ordinary at-home meal. Captain Sandy Yawn later summed up the stakes in a Bravo interview: “A chef is very critical to the boat — because if the food’s bad, the charter’s bad.”
Why taco night alarmed Hannah Ferrier
The taco service became another point of tension. Bravo reported that Mila served prefab taco shells to charter guests. Hannah Ferrier, the chief stew, said she was already concerned after seeing a prepackaged taco kit ordered: “Pre-packaged taco kits… It just raised a lot of red alarms because that’s what I cook at home on like a Tuesday.”

Hannah framed her objection as a question of yacht service, not a rejection of Mexican food. In her interview with Bravo, she said, “If you’re gonna do Mexican on a yacht, you need to make your own tortillas.” She added, “You can’t be putting Old El Paso on a charter guest’s table to eat.” Those comments express Hannah’s expectations for the charter meal; they are not a universal rule about how Mexican food must be prepared.
Why Captain Sandy fired Mila
Bravo reported that guests complained they did not like Mila’s food and that Hannah refused to serve some dishes. Sandy ultimately fired Mila, with Anastasia Surmava brought in to run the galley. Sandy told Bravo that Mila’s résumé had initially seemed persuasive: “Chef Cordon Bleu, like come on, Paris-trained. You want to believe people.” She also described Mila as respectful to her.

Sandy’s explanation for not replacing Mila immediately was the difficulty of hiring a chef during an active season. As she put it, “all the good chefs are taken.” This is Sandy’s account of the staffing constraints, not a claim that no replacement could ever be found.

The steak moment appears in Bravo’s retrospective as an Episode 1 incident, while the taco-kit concerns were discussed in Bravo’s June 2019 interviews with Hannah. Apple TV’s listing for Season 4, Episode 4, “Too Many Cooks in the Kitchen,” released June 24, 2019, says Mila continued to struggle in the galley and Sandy made a temporary adjustment. That listing is an episode synopsis, not a transcript.
