In interrogation, Longlegs suddenly and repeatedly smashes his face against the table. He dies before Lee can question him further. The arrest is real, but it does not provide a full explanation or establish that the threat behind the murders has been contained. TIME’s July 12, 2024, account of the ending describes the sequence and its unresolved aftermath.
Why was Lee’s mother involved?
Lee discovers that her mother, Ruth Harker, had been helping Longlegs. Disguised as a nun, Ruth delivered the dolls connected to his murders. Ruth tells Lee that she was supposed to be one of Longlegs’ victims as a child, but a bargain spared her and turned Ruth into his accomplice.

- Longlegs [Blu-Ray]
That revelation makes the case a family tragedy as well as a pursuit of a killer. Director Osgood Perkins described the film in an Inverse interview published July 12, 2024 as being centrally concerned with parenting and the choices parents make. Ruth’s bargain is one of the film’s starkest examples of a parent’s attempt to protect a child becoming part of the harm surrounding her.
Why can’t Lee shoot Ruby’s doll?
In the final confrontation, Ruth goes to the Carter home with a doll for Ruby’s ninth birthday. Mr. Carter kills his wife. Lee shoots Mr. Carter and then Ruth. She turns her gun toward Ruby’s doll, but the gun clicks empty.

- Longlegs [4K UHD]
The film does not explain the empty gun as a confirmed act of possession or show what happens to Ruby after the cut. Lee cannot destroy the doll, so its remaining influence—and Ruby’s immediate fate—are left open.
What does the ending mean?
Perkins told The Independent on July 16, 2024 that the ending was meant to be tragic, calling it a moment when “The devil wins again on a small scale.” The defeat is personal: Longlegs is dead, but the damage he set in motion has led Lee to kill her mother, and Lee cannot stop the threat to Ruby.
Rank #3
- Horror
That bleak conclusion supports a reading of the film as a story about evil persisting through people’s choices and the harm passed through families. Maika Monroe, who plays Lee, told TIME, “Evil isn’t going anywhere. That’s just the reality. There really is no end.” The line offers thematic context, not a literal explanation for why Lee’s gun is empty.
