Written and directed by Susannah Grant, the film uses that encounter to explore love, change and the way travel can shift a person’s perspective.
What is Lonely Planet about?
Katherine, a reclusive novelist played by Laura Dern, goes to a writers’ retreat in Morocco hoping to move past writer’s block. There she meets Owen, played by Liam Hemsworth, who is at the retreat with his girlfriend. Katherine and Owen’s acquaintance develops into a romance that Netflix describes as life-altering.
That premise sets up a story about connection and personal change. The official synopsis establishes the romantic arc, but does not detail the ending; this overview stays spoiler-light.
Who is in the cast, and who made the film?
Dern and Hemsworth lead the cast. Netflix also lists Diana Silvers, Younès Boucif, Adriano Giannini and Rachida Brakni. Susannah Grant wrote, directed and produced the film. Netflix’s original 2022 project announcement also named Liza Chasin for 3dot Productions and Sarah Timberman as producers.

What themes does the film explore?
Grant said she wanted to explore travel’s power to change how people see themselves and their lives. In her director’s statement for Netflix Tudum, she described the story as one in which leaving familiar surroundings can reveal new perspectives. She also said the film engages with being an outsider in an unfamiliar culture. These are Grant’s stated aims for the story, rather than an independent assessment of its portrayal of Morocco.
Dern described Katherine as someone who has spent her life focused on narrative and is at a turning point, seeking a deeper understanding of herself. She also said the age and experience difference between Katherine and Owen interested her because their connection is about being seen and understood as well as romance.
